I think that most of the people will tell you to set it up how you like it the most but i know that that is not what you want to hear.   I did set my xonar dg to this: 2 channels, PCM 44.1KHz, headphone (pro-gaming mode 32-64ohmz headset), 7.1 off, dolby off. Smart volume off, gaming mode off...

You need to provide us with more information so you will get better help.   Sound card like a Asus xonar DG seem in your budget and will help with your problem.

Have you considered this option. There has been a lot of talk around head-fi about it and people agree that this is a good setup for a start. You can always add a sub later if you feel that the bass is lacking. Hope it helps
