the ground I run from the hardware of the player to the outlet metal undeniably fixes my problem.   I am confused why the problem exists at all.  The dvd player is acting as a transport - does it make sense that RFI can be carried across the digital signal?  Can someone explain this to me?

Yes, I did check source balance - they were set equal.  In fact I've played with it to the point that I detect equality when I put 20% in the left channel (the working one) and 80% in the right (the bad one).  And when I do this and therefore force the right channel to be loud, its very grainy...
