For anyone curious about DACs and the Q701's, I finally got around to purchasing a Schiit Modi. It's paired with a Magni. My source is a Macbook Air.   Pretty huge difference between the computer's built-in DAC and this one. Bass is much more present and everything else has much more space...

Nothing specific. I've heard Grados pair well with rock, but I wonder if you'd then lose the classical qualities.

If you want to spend a lot less than $250, I'd vouch for the Schiit Magni again. I'm very happy with it. It's my first headphone amp, but it compares favorably against a hi-fi Creek 'Destiny' speaker amp. The comparison reviews I've read all seem to praise it as well.
