    Q701 impressions thread

For anyone curious about DACs and the Q701's, I finally got around to purchasing a Schiit Modi. It's paired with a Magni. My source is a Macbook Air.   Pretty huge difference between the computer's built-in DAC and this one. Bass is much more present and everything else has much more space...

Nothing specific. I've heard Grados pair well with rock, but I wonder if you'd then lose the classical qualities.

    Q701 impressions thread

Quote: I think they sound great with classical. But for rock, if there's distortion on the guitars I feel like they emphasize the higher-pitched parts of the distortion, instead of the main thrust of the note. I guess some people would call this 'bright', or others would say they don't...

If you want to spend a lot less than $250, I'd vouch for the Schiit Magni again. I'm very happy with it. It's my first headphone amp, but it compares favorably against a hi-fi Creek 'Destiny' speaker amp. The comparison reviews I've read all seem to praise it as well.

Quote: Yeah, the 600's gave me the impression that Sennheiser mid-fi's aren't the type of sound I'm looking for. If I had found the Q701's offensive I would've gone with the DT990's next. Good to hear they offer something different though, might have to check 'em out at some point...

    Q701 impressions thread

Quote: Interesting. What DAC are you using?   I do find some music fatiguing on the Q's, but so far I've found it depends on two things: the quality of the mix and the DAC.   For example if there's an electronic track where the treble is uncomfortable, it usually applies to that...

    Q701 impressions thread

Just got my pair of Q701's the other day and I'm really liking them. I was also considering the HD 650's and DT990's but decided the Q701 was going to fit my tastes better, and I think I was right. (I didn't get a chance to listen to the 650's or 990's, so I can't compare. I did get to listen to...

    Home-Theater Replacement Phones

Hey folks, having to move forced me to get rid of my 5.1 setup, and buying a new set is not an option. So I've been looking at over-ear headphones to see what might fit the bill. These will primarily be used with Blu-ray movies, some games, only occasional music listening. How they perform with...
