I'd say if you're happy with iPods, stick with it. There are many people who would buy anything except iPods because they don't like the fact that everybody else has one and feel that not having iPod makes them non-conformist and, in a sense, "better" than people who do. People blast the iPod...

I find the tri-flange tip to have the best sound as well. If you're daring, do the bi-flange mod by trimming the stem to be flush with the largest flange then cut off the smallest flange. The bi-flange is comfortable and it doesn't significantly change the sound you get from the tri-flanges.

Depends what type of source you'll be using. IEM's being comfortable is specific to each person so your mileage may vary. If you have ever use IEM's in the past, you'd probably get a good idea on how comfortable they really are. The Super.fi 5 tends to lead towards the bass side while the Shure...

You can get sound out of a Ipod from either the Headphone out (which is horrid) or the Line out. Those are the two areas that I can think of that might sound better in time I'm not sure if Ipods sound better in time, as it is very hard to test. I thought most HD mp3 players spin up for abit to cache a certain amount of songs in memory and play it back thus not skipping during playback. Intense shaking of the player while it is spinning up is another story.
