    Rotel RDV-1050 or RCD-1072....

I've never heard the Rotel RDV-1050 DVD player, but I do have the RCD-1072 and I love it. I also have the Philips 963SA, and the Rotel is a pretty large step up from that player. The bass is tighter on the Rotel, while overall detail and spaciousness is very much improved. The only downside is...

    Favorite Elvis Costello album?

Easy--"My Aim Is True." I bought it as a Stiff Records import in a Times Square Store (remember that?) well before it was released in the USA. I also remember seeing him at one of his first shows in the USA, at the Bottom Line in NYC, the week he played on "Saturday Night Live" in 1977. I waited...

    John Coltrane Festival

They're not doing it in chronological order, per se. They're working from the front to the back, and then the back to the front. For example, last night at 4:00 they started the chronology from the end, which means February 1967. They went to midnight, ending with one of my favorites, "Live in...

    John Coltrane Festival

If you're in the greater New York City area, WKCR-FM, the radio station of Columbia University at 89.9 FM, recently began (this past Thursday) a two-week John Coltrane festival. They're playing Trane 24 hours a day, everything he ever recorded, until Thursday evening, March 25. They're playing...

Coming to CD later this month: Duke Ellington's 1950s/1960s Columbia albums!

Where's Bal Masque? Has it been announced? I picked up an interesing one the other day--it's a 40-CD (yes, 40) set called "The Duke, The Complete Works From 1924-1947 on History. Who knows the source of these recordings, but I've listened to a couple of the CDs and the transfers aren't bad at...

Philips consumer electronics division may be shut down

I read the same article this morning, and it doesn't surprise me, given that they've been poorly run in the States for years. Both their marketing and distribution were poor, they let others capitalize on their inventions, and they focused too much on the low end with Maganavox. It would be hard...

Best Classical and Jazz FM Station in NYC area

I second WKCR, 89.9 FM. Adventurous, both for Classical and Jazz. Their Jazz "Birthday Broadcasts" for Ellington, Coltrane, Pops, etc., are second to none. Last week, they finished with the week-long (and annual) Bach festival. As of September 12, they started broadcasting at 4 Times Square, so...
