Maybe it's because my ears are, shall we say, unique, but I don't know how anyone can listen to headphones without a bit of EQ to at least somewhat tailor the sound to their personal HRTF.  Are a lot of folks just lucky and have ears that naturally "fit" a range of headphones?

My EQ (or "Say again?")     Believe it or not, this sounds great to me.  But, I still think it's funny, which is why I'm sharing it here.

There's allegedly a discrete amp somewhere in the mix.  I dunno.  I can't say that I really care, either.   I just have to hold out for the right DAC/amp.  Believe me, it's not a matter of procrastination; it's a matter of currently being unable to provide remuneration, so to speak.

Yes, "Sound Enhancements" is found in the "Sounds" control panel.  With all of them disabled, the sound's actually not half-bad.  It's certainly good enough that I don't feel compelled to buy a temporary DAC/amp, which would only serve to delay getting proper gear that much longer.   Though...

Ha!  Don't I feel dumb.   "Just keep using the Dell to listen to music, fool."   So, there's that.  I still welcome any suggestions, something more elegant perhaps.  

Most people don't detect a difference between properly encoded 256kps and anything higher, no matter the gear.  I'm one of those people.   That said, all of my prized music is encoded losslessly.  It's a mental thing, I suppose.
