    thieaudio phantom information?

Yes, ConnorG has driven a lot of the modding discussion! I hope he weighs in here, because I'm pretty sure he later said the magnetic-grille thing was a false alarm, measuring FR both with and without even, and finding no difference. But I am not sure if that's the latest-latest of his...

    thieaudio phantom information?

The latest consensus seems to be that the grille is fine. Unfounded fears based on it being magnetic and close to the drivers. There are a couple of different ideas about the foam behind the grilles at this point -- remove completely, or put one of the circles back in, with a new very thin...

    Verum 1

These just arrived in the mail... and after about 20 minutes (barely a sniff) I love them. I am awaiting a (Mass)Drop THX AAA 789, perhaps November, at which point I'll be all in on the "balanced" discussion; will get a balanced attenuator too, for safety of the amp... but already single ended...

    Verum 1

Thank you both. Apologies for my poor writing -- I know you can't run any old amp balanced if it's not designed that way, but clarifications are appreciated. I was thinking specifically of the FOTM (Mass)Drop TXH 789, which I also know has the further wrinkle of not being "truly" balanced, but...

    Verum 1

So is running these balanced just a matter of finding a balanced cable with 2.5 mm connectors and an XLR connector for the amp side? (Assuming an XLR balanced output on an amp). And... why do you think this is? What I understand about the electronics of this will rattle in a thimble, so forgive...

Your 5 newest CDs (or LPs)

Power Tools - Live at the Knitting Factory (ordered directly from Ronald Shannon Jackson's website, in honor of Pete Cosey, R.I.P.  That said I got a 1984 quartet show, which isn't what I thought...  but it's still GREAT!) Shawn Lane - Tri-tone Fascination Shawn Lane - Powers of Ten Live...

Your favorite interpretation of "Four Seasons"

Some of those already mentioned I'd agree with (and several I haven't heard); of the more recent things I've heard, though, I'll second Janine Jansen -- for small forces.  And I don't think anyone mentioned Joshua Bell, who did another really good recent one for larger forces.    If I had to...

    My Music Server!

I wish I understood all this! I have roughly 6,000 cds, and they're rather a mess; ripped to hard drives semi-randomly, running through itunes or VLC for uncoverted flacs or occasional wavs.  It's not random, but it's NOT organized either.  What you have looks gorgeous.  (And I totally get the...

    King Crimson 40th Anniversary releases

Quote: You're in for some treats, as you no doubt know already! Having owned ToaPP, I'll be especially curious how much Discipline and Beat gt to you. And if you loved Red already, I would submit that you need Larks Tongues in Aspic, though it might be something you want to wait for...

    Epic jazz drumming albums?

Art Blakey's "Free For All".  It'll take your head off.  Literally.  I mean, not literally.  That wouldn't be good.  The first two tracks on that record ("Free For All" and "Hammerhead").  And I love falis' recommendations -- thought I'd posted specifically RJS's "Mandance" and Jack DeJohnette's...

    Keith Jarrett Discussion and Poll

Tough choice -- I picked the Standards Trio, but there are so many recordings and some are so much better than others.  I probably listen most often to the cd "The Cure" though.  But some of the solo things, some of the American Quartet things, I love about equally with the best of the Standards...

    Speaking of the Beatles...

I agree with batphink.  The 2009 remasters are your best bet -- particularly the mono remasters where available (except for maybe a song here or there).  Get the Mono set and the stereo-only records separately (Abbey Road, Let It Be, and Yellow Submarine if you must).

Classic Female Jazz Vocalists & Albums

Some essentials - "Pure Ella" from Ella Fitzgerald.  On this one she's accompanied only by piano (a masterful Ellis Larkins), which puts the spotlot more firmly on her than most recordings. And she's at a peak.   Billie Holiday -- the Columbia sets, "The Quintessential Billie Holiday" are...
