    You could try the FiiO E17, it's a usb dac/amp. You insert a usb cable from your laptop to the E17 and plug your headpshone into the E17 headphone output.

    Headphone adapter? Did you mean amplifier? Control your volume via the amp

    1) Whiplash/ Toxic Cables/ Silver Dragon... etc 2) My UM3x doesnt seem to benefit much from external amping. Perhaps there's a touch more of bass when amping. 3) I dont know

    What LOD would you recommend?

    Both are silver plated copper, but I'm not sure if a 'cyro-ed' wire makes any sonic difference. So if I were you, I would just order from the amp and cable from RSA since it would be more convenient.
