Context:

I got these a while back from a Japanese seller. I paid a bit over 500 USD. I have searched for these for a few years now and only 2-3 have shown up online and this is one of them. The last one before this one also went for a bit over 500 USD. This is infinitely rarer than its brother, the CD900 (original with amorphous diamond coated drivers). I see 2 or 3 original CD900 come up every month or so on Japanese sites. The CD700 here has amorphous gold coated drivers and you can see that the drivers are indeed visually golden. I believe only a couple of other Sony headphones used amorphous gold in their drivers - the only other I can think of is the MDR-V606. These were made during the times of Sony's golden era where they really experimented with exotic materials in their headphones.

The CD700 has blacked out "left" and "right" indicators on the headband and a sorta matte finish to them. The CD900 has a glossy finish on its earcups and gold "left" and "right" indicators. The CD700 has a straight cable whereas the CD900 has a coiled cable. The CD700 had a shorter production run (1986-1989) than the OG CD900 (1985-1992). Both were only sold in Japan.

Although this is one of my personal grails of vintage headphones, something urgent came up so I hope that someone who cares a lot about vintage Sony's or really vintage headphones in general will give them a caring home. I would prefer to get my asking price since I'm already losing a fair bit but I will be considering offers as well since something urgent came up on my side.

It's in great functional condition. Cosmetically, very good for its age. I replaced the urethane rings that go around the driver and earpads with new authentic parts. Very minor scratches and scuffs on its earcups only visible in certain lighting. The "For DIGITAL" stickers still look very nice. The headband text is still there miraculously. The pleather under the headband has normal wear in these older Sony's - you can see them in photos. The cable is still very nice and supple. I highly doubt you will ever find a MDR-CD700 in this of condition ever unless if one shows up new in box and deadstock.

From a smoke-less and pet-less home.

Please let me know if you have any questions! I will gladly discuss in PM.
