Both the balanced and single-ended outputs work. All three gain modes work. Both single-ended and XLR inputs work. The bypass switch works. Everything works.
I've used this amp for everything from sensitive IEMs to inefficient planar headphones. Probably has the blackest noise floor of any amplifier, for zero-noise usage with IEMs. On high gain in balanced mode, there's no audible noise floor until around 2 o'clock, through a 94 db rated Sundara, where it's loud enough to cause hearing loss. Have used this amp to drive an 83 db HE-6se v2, and it was able to get pretty loud, though you may desire a bit more overhead—which is why I have a speaker amp. Been using the speaker amp exclusively, so this 789 needs a new owner.
