I've been living on IEMs for quite a long time. My only foray into over ears or on ears was the hd 202 from sennheiser, which I didn't really mind at all (I sold that one to a good friend). I have been meaning to get a pair of portable on-ears to replace the hd 202s for quite a while to have a bit of sonic variety in my collection. U know - not just a drawer full of iems.

Anyhow, I've been looking around and seen good reviews for the sony zx700. is there anything else around or just above that price point which won't disappoint?

You didn't mention what will be driving this can, so I'm assuming it's a low power portable device without an amp.  If so the Sony you selected is a very good one for the money.   See:

This one is esentially identical, except it offers more for Apple iPhone users--and its cheaper at Amazon:

Theres the donscorpio dolphin from penon audio and onkyo es fc300. I cant find the comparison in the asian headphone thread but heres a summary:
The dolphin has more of a sub bass bump and is a bit brighter with the soundstage mod. The soundstage on the donscorpio is supposedly much bigger than the es fc300.
The mids and vocals are pretty much even. The es fc300 has more mid bass.

I like those Sony quite a bit, unfortunately I think they make a very crappy portable, as the bass is fairly detailed and accurate unfortunately they don't isolate tremendously well and the bass is the first thing to go when out and about and they are good for listening in quieter places or at home, cant really recommend as a portable. But otherwise very underrated headphone, I like it more than the 1R

I'd recommend the UE6000, they are going for uber cheap nowadays
