Plugging straight in seems to have fixed it! I was under the impression that the different pinout configs were physically incompatible, and that the adaptor fitting indicated that the tube would not fit straight. I also didn't realize they changed their pinout between gens, I thought the only difference was a different stock tube. Thanks all! While you're here, feel free to be an enabler and recommend my next roll.

Native options:

Musical, lush options: WE 396A from 50s or early 60s. RCA Command 5670.

If you want to empty pockets quickly, Bendix 6385 - very detailed presentation.

If you want to keep on the cheap, GE 5-Star 5670. Just ignore the virtual sigh from @bcowen.

My understanding is that the 5670 line from the 50s (GE, Raytheon, RCA command) is comparable with the 396A at a more palatable price. Would you agree with that?

Maybe... but have a couple 50s 396As that are really special to my ears. The others aren't that far behind.

Still... when you're building a hoard collection, best to start cheap and cheerful and work your way up the financial alligator. Besides, if you start at the tippy top there's only one direction left.

My current pile of use next / first 5670s (including the apparently sigh inducing 5-Stars):

Listening to the Vali 2++ with WE396A tube, via a WiiM Pro, and Bifrost 2/64, and Clear OG. Quite the experience. The right tube takes this amp from “pretty good, especially for the price” to GREAT!

And the OG does a great job of filling you in on what the amp/tube and your source are doing.

Can someone verify whether Vali 2++ is fully electrically compatible with 6SN7 and 6922 tubes using a simple socket adapter (i.e., besides the "trying it, working fine and has not blown up so far" type of testing)?
Many thanks

That is quite the setup! Also, a Head-Fier not fearful of: $tube > $h/p/a 👍!
