Most stabilised variants are maple, sometimes oak. I havent seen a soft stabilised wood variant yet I believe. Stabilised ZMF are usually compareable with hardwood variants.

After trying stabilised wood AC and soft Redwood burl, for me it was Redwood burl hands down, there is some very special magic going on with soft woods and closed cups.

Now that I have 2 AC, one Redwood burl and the other Macassar Ebony, they both have some special magic going on! Using Bokeh suedes on both. The Redwood sounds significantly more expansive and brighter which seems to give a bit more detail to female vocals. But the bass on the Macassar is just something else! It rumbles in a way that it simply doesn't on the Redwood. When I heard both soft and hard wood versions at CanJam last year, already owning the Redwood, I was really struck by how different the two extremes of softness and hardness are. Gladly that difference has persisted now that I have 2 on my own system. This is the first headphone I've had 2 of with the intention of keeping both and already can't imagine letting go of either one. My amp has 2 jacks so makes it very easy to quickly compare without there being other differences or big time delays which impact auditory memory.

I don't think one can go wrong with either option, assuming stabilized are closer to Macassar in sound (and there is that one gorgeous Macassar too). Overall though for my tastes the harder wood is my preference. That's been consistent in every ZMF I've had 2 of, that I seem to prefer harder woods. Main reason I plan to get a blackwood VC eventually to contrast with my softwood koa VC.

I have had such an incredible experience with my African Blackwood VCs- they are remarkable headphones, especially for acoustic music and vocals. And with an OTL amp with the right tubes, they can really plumb the depths too. Highly, highly recommended.

(Not to tempt you too much, Rob, but I saw a very reasonably-priced B-stock pair here or on USAM. I’m not evil enough to link it here though- if you’re interested, I’ll leave some “friction for purchase” to give you an “out” )

one rod of my new Atrium Closed is loose (which is a bit disappointing ) and I want to apply some threadlocker. Is there an alternative to VC-3? Vibra-tite is extremely hard to find for me.

If you have the aluminum chassis you can also use Loctite Blue - just be extra cautious not to get it on your cups

Ah ok, from what Zach's said in his older servicing videos, don't use the Loctite with the magnesium frames - I don't remember the exact effect, I expect it can strip the finish at best.

Nice and interesting review. A few months ago I had to decide between VC and AC and this review would have been a great help. I'm sure it will be for some others who will have to choose.

Also good music to support the review. I usually try to listen to the same tracks while reading the review, for better understanding. Now some of the albums you mentioned are included in my favorites list.

I agree with you that the AC does a good job of creating depth from front to back. I love its ability to faithfully reproduce the place where the music was recorded (it's excellent with live recordings)
