hey peeps,

being relatively young and without a vast collection of musical gems, i thought this little thread would be quite interesting. it'd help people like me discover new albums or musical genres.

anway. here it goes. someone offers to pay you a million dollars with one catch. you have to live on a desolate island for half a year! with nothing but a 7-11 (hehe). and you are allow to bring a portable cd player, amp if you so choose, pair of your best headphones. and five (5) cds of your choice. unlimited batteries are supplied.

with nothing to do but talk to the store clerk and listen to music, what five albums will you choose to while the months away?

any genre, you have to pick only five cds. please give a very brief reason for each album you choose. take your time in thinking about this. don't need to rush it. i'd be fascinated to read the replies.

thanks!

hey Beastie,

we usually start these threads by listing our own faves.Let's see what your five would be.

BTW,the 7-11 is a nice touch.Is the clerk female?Is she hot?Does she have a phone sex voice?

alrighty!

i'll start off with my selections:

1) Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
2) somethin' else - Cannonball Adderley
(only two jazz albums i have! but they are soo good. i've been listening to both of them none stop for like a week on my md while at school. so, i have a feeling these two are classics. the thing about music without and vocals is that you can listen to them over and over. at least i can. never get bored.)
3) any good album by J. S. Bach with the song "Air" in it. that's absolutely my favourite classical piece. i don't own any cds unless you count the classical music for relaxation with ocean sounds!!
biggrin.gif
wahaha!
4) All Eyez on Me - 2pac (ya it's rap. for days that piss me off, like a hangover from drinking too much buds and coconut milk. i'll pop this album in and swear at the world. okay they are technically 2 cds. but they are still sold as a set, so i'll count them as one unit. note: anyone is allowed to pull a dual cd set as an album. but you can put in a box set of multiple cds and cheat like that, capeesh?)
5) Beatles - one with yellow submarine on it. i don't own any of their albums though. i pick this because somedays i need to mellow out. and nothing is better than the beatles.

there you have it. i hope you guys with a vast collection will be more specific in picking your albums.

thanks,

beastie

ps- sure, clerk is a hot babe (let's say she looks like heidi klum for the sake of imagination). but unfortunately she's a lesbian and has no interest in you. and there's survelience camera in the store so you won't be able to pull anything nasty. store's open 24-7. and amazingly she works 24-7! hehe

oh, heidi speaks german i think. and you don't! she can say hi, and thank you and come again only. like a eye candy...)

Remove the apostrophe, and I think we have a winner.

Five cds... here's what I'd take at this moment:

- Nightwish : Wishmaster
- Tiny Snow Sugar Fairy : Music.Note.1
- Charlotte Church : Enchantment

I'll post why later, got to get some sleep now.

Iced Earth - Horror Show...very heavy stuff, complex riffs and moody long-winded lyrics. With a good system it's magic.

Falconer - Falconer...their first album, melodic power metal. I have their second. I've heard their first is good. I'd have to have at least one new CD for the trip.

Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime...if I brought a pair of closed cans. I haven't paid much attention to this album besides the general idea of the story.

Metallica - Master of Puppets...I needed an excuse to buy this album anyway.

Everclear - So Much For The Afterglow...So what if I have this CD memorized. Now I get a chance to sing it out loud.

Travels - Pat Metheny
Pulse - Pink Floyd
London Calling - The Clash
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
The Cure - Pornography

I am sure there are better choices but these do sound good even after microwaved burritos and Slurpies.

Man, this would be a hard decision, but at the moment I guess I would take these with me:

- PORCUPINE TREE - Lightbulb Sun - This is my current favorite band, and this album one of the most representative of their wonderful music (kind of a mix of the more Floyd-ish sound of their earlier releases with the heavier sound of their later stuff).

- MOSTLY AUTUMN - The Spirit of the Autumn Past - I do love all thei albums of this band, but I would take Spirit of the Autumn Past at the moment. For those not familiar with the music of this brilliant group yet, it reminds me kind of a mix of recent Pink Floyd with The Chieftains.

- CAMEL - Moonmadness - This is another of my all-time favorite bands, featuring one of the most emotive guitar work I have ever listened to, you can recognize Andy Latimer anywhere you listen to one of his wonderful riffs.

- JADE WARRIOR - Elements: The Island Anthology - This 2-CD set features 4 of their releases, including their best album to date IMO, "Way Of The Sun". The music is soft progressive rock with mid-Eastern elements.

- PINK FLOYD - Animals - There are at least three other great Floyd releases worth taking to that island (Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon & The Wall), but "Animals" has one of the best PF songs, "Dogs", and this alone is worth taking this album with me.

Okay, these five would have to be albums that I never tire of. I love a stirring symphony as much as the next guy, but I'd rather be rocking out and singing along on my little island...

1. Lagwagon - Let's Talk About Feelings: My favorite album by my favorite band. Short and sweet, I don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to this.
2. Alkaline Trio - S/T: This Is Getting Over You has to be one of the best songs I've ever heard. Bleeder and Cooking Wine...man. Why do they suck so much now?
3. Get Up Kids - Something To Write Home About: C'mon, who doesn't have a copy of this? At least you all should. So go buy it. Now. Go. Buy.
4. Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out of Something: A recent acquisition of mine so it's odd that it would make this list. Most of this stuff has been long time favorites of mine. It's that good though. Actually I'm not really sure if this is my favorite of theirs yet, but it's fast becoming it. I gotta have something by Modest Mouse with me.

Lonesome Crowded West is great too, and uh, Moon & Antarctica, and This Is A Long Drive and....
5. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity: An amazing start-to-finisher like the rest. This is their best work.

So...my favorite rock albums but in actuality this will probably work out like crap since I feel like different kinds of music at different times...I just can't leave any of those out though hehe.

OK computer - Radiohead
The soft bulletin - Flaming lips
Mezzaine - massive attack
Family tree - Bjork (Hey, you never disqualified boxed sets!)

Radohead - OK Computer
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Pink Floyd - Echoes
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

That satisfies my soft rocker, hard rocker, folk, new-age rock and jazz. Perfect.

stereolab: transient random...
beethoven: 9th symphony (bohm/vpo 1971)

Pink Floyd-Animals (Hell Yes)
Tool-Aenima
Tom Petty- Best of or something
Cypress Hill-Temples of Boom
Eddie Murphy-Delerious

Actually, for a desert island I don't know what would hold up. This makes me think of The Lord of the Flies and I can't imagine listening to any music in that situation. Maybe Tina Turner's We Don't Need Another Hero...

wow, great choice on eddie murphy's delerium.

need some comedy when you're alone. or else schizophrenic behaviour might start. too much punk or heavy rock for an extended period of time may promote such behaviour.

thanks for all the suggestions. i'm gonna find some on the net and listen to them. see how i like them.

for anyone who's contributing. please add a brief reason for each choice. won't take that long to type up. it'll help in describing why each album was selected.
