Why are K1000 pads so expensive?

I wanted to get an extra set of the temple pads for my K1000, but I was quoted over $26 each and there's four of them! I can't figure out how these stupid little things could cost that much, especially compared to the prices for full-size pads.

I wonder if there is a good DIY alternative to the stock pads. I guess I could probably just wrap some dense open-cell foam with fabric and glue it on...

Yeah, I was thinking to get some new ones just for hell of it, but when I got that price I went:

Mind you, the pads themselves look pretty simple, all they did was stick some foam on a board and glue some leather on it. You can get 12" and smaller sheets of nice supple leather on ebay and foam.. A pair of scissors and some crazy glue should do the job.

Yeah, but if I'm gonna DIY it I might as well just use the stuff I already have laying around here. I have several cubic feet of various foams, and a few different things I could use for cloth covering (or I could cut up a regular pleather earpad).

Unbelievable.
I guess (hope) someone got it wrong.
It's probably $26 for a complete set.
I mean, that's foam covered with pleather. The material for the whole set costs them ~ 30 cent or so.Labor and markup might blow the prize up to $26, but $104?No way.

They are two different pieces (big pad and small pad), and listed individually (the quantity listed in the service sheet is 2 of each part number). I was quoted $26.91/ea for the bigger ones, and $26.31/ea for the smaller ones.

Reminds me of when I was still fixing up my K270HC. The amount they wanted for just the electret mic element was twice as much as you could buy the complete headset mic that it was based on. Fortunately I found that the mic itself was fine and it was just the muting board inside that was bad (which I got a new one for free), but sometimes their prices make no sense. Some stuff is surprisingly cheap, some stuff ridiculously expensive.

This does seem fairly common. I recall years ago someone got the price of all the parts needed to build a Ford Escort and it came to something like 50,000 dollars. Not bad for a 10,000 car

At the end of it's run the K1000 sold for, what, $450? Now they want $400 per driver last I inquired.

I had the same expiriance with Harmon Kardon Holland, simpy sucking everything from out of your wallet with smile on their face.

@Fitz

I will check how much these up here and let you know. One problem, USD/EUR differences.

I've paid less than $100 per driver.
This was in 2006 though.

My info on price was second hand from someone who asked AKG so may have been inaccurate. Given how much they want for temple pads now, I think the $400 figure may well be true at this time. That was one of the reasons I bought a second set, it was cheaper than a new pair of drivers and repair costs should I ever blow them up.
