I'm happy with the RS-1s and have been for something like eight years. But I've kinda got the itch to try something different . . . just to see what else is going on "out there." Any suggestions?

Depends on your tastes, but a Stax SR-007 Omega II is worth auditioning. The forthcoming Audio-Technica top model phone may also be of interest to you. Release date is 21st October I think. I find the previous one (ATH-W2002) an improvement in terms of detail and revealing capability, but not in terms of 'entertainment value'.

Oh yes, as markl says, the CD3000 too. Cheaper but better in some ways. Once again you need to take a listen to see how you like these.

Cans to research:

1. Sony CD3000
2. Audio-Technica W2002
3. Senn HD650 (upcoming successor to HD600)
4. Maybe look at Beyer DT880 or maybe the AKG K1000

Depending on budget:
1. Sony R10 ($4K)
2. Stax Omega 2 with amp (~$3.5 K or so?)

What kind of amp are you running right now, may be another avenue for upgrade. Also each headphone has its best amp match-ups, so you may need experiment once you find the cans you like.

"Better" you ask? How about the Sennheiser HD600.

As far as I know, the HP-1's are supposedly better than the RS-1's and more neutral, but getting your paws on one is another issue...

OK, should've mentioned a few things: 1] I'm using flat pads 2] headphone amp will be Cary SI-80 [arrives next week . . . I hope!] 3] I'd like to keep this at under $1000 and 4] of course this is all subjective, that's why I put "better" in quotes [but you all *knew* that]. Thanks for your comments thus far. Hope this new info helps narrow the field of possibilities.

You said you wanted something different, and the HD600 is probably as different as it gets from the RS-1. I recommend trying it.
