Thanks for the lengthy response, derbigpr. I can't disagree with you; I haven't AB-ed the HP4 against high-end amps. I hope to do it sometime to hear for myself what you're talking about. 
 
But I don't hear any noise coming out of my HP4, at any level. And they do drive the HD600 to ear-splitting volumes.

  I have the AKG K7XX with the Schiit Vali 2 and I really like this combo.  K7XX is pretty close in SQ to the 712 and a great value,  and so is the Vali 2 IMO.

I want to buy the 712 pro's aswell, do i need an extra DAC next to the vali 2? and what if i want to listen on the road? will it sound like **** whitout the shiit? i have a oneplus 3 so it's one of the latest phones if that helps.

What would you recommend for a dac and a amp total under 200 ish for the akg712 pro
