the line-out pre-amped signal is an analog (wave) signal, that means it's already gone thru a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter).
Only a digital (zero& ones) signal, which is usually sent thru a USB, optical or coaxial connection, would connect to a DAC.

You plug the E7 into the laptops USB port for using both the E7's DAC and amplifier.
Plug the laptop's headphone jack into the E7's line-in port for just using the E7's amplifier.

Unless you already have a great sound card on your laptop, you will probably have better SQ via USB so you can use it as a DAC/AMP
