As an old school ipod'er, I dutifully bought an LOD to use with my new iPad (1st gen, iPad). And I've noticed something very weird. Amping it with a Millett Hybrid Maxed, I get hiss when I use the LOD to send the signal to the amp. When I use the headphone jack...no hiss. Also, when I leave the LOD on and stop playing the music using the pause button on the Ipad, I hear the hiss for about 8 seconds and then then it disappears. Start the music, hiss returns. Pause music. Just hiss for 8 or so seconds then it disappears. Obviously, I'm going back to just using the headphone jack, but any gueses why I'm hearing this his through the LOD only? Weird.

Well, doing a quick web search showed others (here at Headfi and elsewhere) noticing this using an LOD with an iPad. I guess the lesson to be learned is don't bother with an LOD using the ipad.  I wondering if it might have something to do with the memory buffer (if they still do that) since the hiss lasts about 8 seconds after the music is paused. Didn't they use a memory buffer in the ipods so you could play gapless?

Oh, well, I'm thinking this is a problem that will never get addressed. Talk about a Headfi/audiophile picky point. "Hey, Apple, my iPad has hiss using an LOD." Yeah, right. Never going to see THAT fixed. Still, I'm glad to see we here at Headfi are once again on the audiophile balll.

well i have an ipad v1 and i have never noticed your problem, what iOS are you using? this sounds software related. i have also produced a number of lods for ipad users and have not had this problem mentioned by anyone. i use jh13 which are pretty sensitive, so i would think i would hear it if it was there.

what kind of LOD do you have.  maybe it is something in the way its made.

not everyone follows the same methods for making LOD's.  for example some people use pin 1 to ground, and some short 1 and 2 together.. there could be a factor like that at work.

but yes definitely upgrade to the latest ios if you havent already.

I'm experiencing the same problem when listening through my 160GB iPod. When I connect it through the jack to my amp I hear very little hiss but when I connect it through the LOD the hiss becomes much louder. And I'm testing this without playing any music at all so its not due to low kbs. My current LOD is a cheap one I bought on ebay for 12$ though...I'm currently waiting for a Sendstation LOD to arrive (which is recommended by HeadRoom) along with a canare cable and I'm really hoping it will make a difference....I'll let you know if there will be any...

But in case it doesn't, what mp3 player would you recommend for the best audio quality that has a large capacity(preferably over 100GB)?
