Lost the part number for the HD600 girlls and the HD650 cable so if you have them please pitch in.

The great thing about the drivers it that the baffles that are included have the carbon fiber construction so you get the great HD650 engineering. and it's easy enough to switch between the HD580/600 and the HD650 Elements/drivers, just need to pop off the grille and the cushions and disconnect the cord. therefore you will have a convertable headphone that can transform into an HD650 at will.

You could go all the way and replace the headband, but I don't know how much replacing the headband will effect the sound, but I can't imagine it would be that much.

Cheers, and I hope this will bring head-fiers some more flexibility in their customization.

So, you spend 2 * $68 + shipping to get a pair of unmatched drivers? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Good luck with that.

Not to mention the source and amp upgrades needed to really capitalize on the enhancement.

I'll stick with a modded HD580.

this would be like taking a Ford escort and putting $40,000 into tuning it, instead of just buying a BMW.

In my opinion, only the HD600 grills and the HD650 cables are worthy upgrades for the 580s. Other upgrades don't offer enough improvement for the price. Law of diminishing returns kicks in here.

That being said, I just bought some Carda cables for my 580s. I'll see how they sound, if the improvement isn't significant, I'll probably end up selling those cables.

Basicly those two answers sums up your question.

I don't think the "650 sound" is really an upgrade for many folks. More like a sideways move, a different sound. Some prefer it, many prefer the 580 or
600. So there's no reason to make a 580 or 600 into a 650.

I guess this mod is for the curious. I'm not sayin that this is a upgrade, just an experiment

I'm assuming that a disparity of volume on both side would be a concern and a risk with unbalanced drivers, but maybe there is a way to request a pair of balance drivers from Sennheiser?

The HD650 drivers are known to be difficult to drive, but that's is a given.

But if the two above requirements are fullfilled, is it really such a bad idea?
keep in mind that one can swap between the HD650 drivers and the HD580/600 drivers with ease, so you can basically have both cans with this mod.

another idea for the 600 > 650 camp is to order balanced 600 drivers and have it interchanged with the drivers in the 650.

well, I'm going to try it

franken-650's here I come!

the total for me was about $150. I ordered new pads (1 set) and 2 new drivers (they don't come as a set) and a cord just for the heck of it. all that was about $150. looks like it will be a 4 week waiting period for the drivers so my whole shipment will be held up for about a month.

I have the 580 right now and plan to swap those 3 things out and see how it works.

I consider the 600 and the 650 a downgrade compared to the 580. I have owned all three at the same time and found the older senn flagship to be the best. It was up against the RS1 for over 10 years for a reason. The 600 didn't last half that and the 650 is not gonna usurp the 580s record.
