While still working with the ASIO stuff, I suddenly realized that
I also have a playstation2, which has an optical audio out...

So if use this with my DAC, there should be no difference if I used a $1000
CDP instead, since all it does is reading 0s and 1s in a digital signal. Right?

And since there's no K-mixer in PS2, it will bring out the optimum
performance of my DAC with a bit-perfect signal. Am I correct?

If this is true, it solves all my problems and headaches once and for all!!

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Or else I might be too excited
that I'll drop my cash on useless set of optical cables...

Yeah, just head on over to the diyaudio forum's and you'll see the problems associated with optical. Disappointing, to say in the least. But then again, if you truly wish for a good connection, s/pdif is most definately not the way to go. (A custom cd player with I2S output to a DAC sounds like a good plan, but an expensive one at that.)

It wouldn't be that bad though, but you really should explore a better source than a PS2 as a transport for a DAC.
Digital isn't just 0's and 1's either, as much as we'd like it to be. Oh if things were that simple....

Ok, so it would be far worse than optical out from decent CDPs,
but it should still be much better than the non-bit-perfect,
K-mixer processed signal from my laptop's USB audio, right?

Well if not, than I can just forget about it

In a way. Of course you want to use a re-clocking DAC to avoid the jitter, and you sure want to use some isolation tweaks. But yeah, anything with an optical out can become hell of a source if you hook it up to a good DAC. Nontheless, for some reason those really good drives with their really good PSUs and superb drive-mechanisms may still outperform it.

Why don't you just try it, and let your ears decide.

OMG can't believe I didn't try this the first time I got it...
So this is what head-fiers call night-and-day difference.

I've been doing disservice to the DAC and my ears all along.
I'm ne'er goin' back to the crappy USB hassle again

P.S.: Don't get me wrong though, I know USB setups can
be perfect and trounce anything I've auditioned hands down.
Just that It didn't work out that way for me

I have tried hooking up the playstation 2 to a chord dac 64 1+2 in the past. Unfortunately while the results were better than the PS2 as a standalone player I had better results when I used a cheapy sony cdp and connected it to the DAC.
