Hi guys,

DUNU held a Trident review event on August. Now all review are ready though some are absent this time due to the custom delay and other reasons. The review links are as following. The best three reviewers would be awarded with Hephaes, the fun, hyper bass model. Please vote for the best review thanks. At 10/25, we will announce the best three view.

must say i don't like the precedent being set here, that we now give away free products to people who offer favorable reviews. is this how things are usually done on head-fi these days? did any of these members even purchase these iems to begin with or were they all gifted at the review event? this will make me VERY wary of trusting reviews from these members going forward.

I think people would write a favorable review more often for purchased earphones to justify the money they spent on it. Nobody thinks this is the best sounding earphones but for $40, it's built like a brick shizhouse and has a decent sound. It's just how I view things but others may think different.

As the above stated we are not voting on what the most positive review is but who has the nicest review in terms of overall writing style and so forth. Also even if I was given something to review I would not lie if I did not like it. For example I have stated that I could not really recommend the DN-16 to most people. However with that said I really enjoyed the DN-12s! I'm an honest guy even if I'm given stuff free.

Just saying in my defense, but I've done many reviews on freebies/loaned gear that I did not spend on, and many reviews for gear I *did* spend on, and from my experience you actually do tend to favorably review an item you spent a lot on rather than one you got for free.

The reason is that you spent money on it and have a vested interest in it. When you receive something for free you don't have any of these psychological strings attached to make you *want* to like the item -- it's a psychological defense to preserve your ego and reassure yourself that you didn't just waste a wad of green on crap.  Believe me -- try spending say $1000 on an LCD2 or a Benchmark DAC1 or a Beta22 or an HD800... and see if you can bring yourself to say it sounds disappointing. It's very, very hard to say it sounds like crap.

You should also note that the criteria in the voting doesn't say that you vote for the says the item is good. I bet a lot of members here would voted for a review that trashed the product just because it resonated with them -- you yourself might have done this.

The truth though is that, for $50 or so that the Trident costs, it's a surprisingly good IEM. That is just the honest to goodness perception I had of it, and it's the same for most of the reviewers. This is a ridiculously good sounding IEM at $50 -- although I've made it clear in my review that it isn't the best I've heard, nor is it the best at its price point even -- I've even pointed out the IEM I think is the best in its price bracket in the review. I bet the folks at Dunu weren't all that thrilled to hear me say that, and I don't know if that hurt my chances at the Hephaes or not, but that's how I honestly feel. I felt no compunction to say otherwise. I should also note that I no longer have the Tridents with me -- as I noted in the review as well. They were good, but not a keeper for me. I have given them away to a friend who said he wanted them -- I also don't sell stuff I get for free on principle. I just pass it on.

If you still doubt my integrity after that, I don't know what to say.

I'll check in here. DUNU gave the Tridents to people they saw had experience reviewing things--not "yes" men. That'd be shilling which a huge no-no. Sure, I'll admit I've been slightly influence by the fact that I've been given stuff for free because of the generosity of a company, but I'm not going to tell people something crappy is awesome; that'd ruin my image if a whole bunch of people end up hating them.

If you want to see a jaded review from me, see my Fanny Wang review. I really didn't like them, but I tried to find some positive points because they were a new company and I'm all for the little guy. They had a unique sound signature, and I said so. I basically said that they didn't do anything right, but for what they are, which is a fashion headphone to compare to Beats, they were okay.

If you read my review (whose pictures I forgot to upload, d'oh! I spent so much time trying to get the details. I'll upload them anyways this weekend.), I stated that the Tridents were much of the same with the Fanny Wangs. If you pick the sound apart, they're not that great, but the total package makes for a good value because they're such a chill pair of IEM's. I like them more than the Brainwavz M1 and MEElectronics CW31, which are in the same price bracket. Both may be technically better than the DUNU creation, but as a package, the Tridents are quite nice.

I've gotten a lot of free stuff (more than I can keep track of; I have some in a box, others on loan. I'd like to sell some of it to get some spending money, but I can't sell free stuff; I'm not that kind of person.) and the fact is that the things companies give for review samples are generally in the same ballpark. Comparisons are inevitable, and if I was all for commending the companies who give me stuff, it'd be hard to keep track of my random musings when people want to know which is better than the other. We can praise all we want, but stating negatives in a product is more productive.

Awesome! I'm also receiving a HiSound Audio Popo soon so I'm gonna have another nice vs. battle, looks like a Bass Bonanza as I hear both the Popo and the Hephaes are bass IEMs.
