Hi guys,

I have noticed that it is quite hard to find any quality recordings of Vivaldi's Opus 2 12 violin sonatas. I have in my collection the Manchester Sonatas version performed by Andrew Manze, Nigel North and John Toll.

I lready have he 1-6 violin sonata single CD perforemd by Elizabeth Walfisch on a Hyperion Release.

Does anyone know of any other recordings that stand out from the rest?

Also could you guys suggest similar recordings for my collection.
I already have shortlisted Corelli's 12 Concerti Grossi,Op. 6.

Look forward to some words of advice.

I don't have any Vivaldi recommendations, but you might like to look into the Handel Concerto Grossi, Opus 6.

I don't have that Vivaldi's Sonatas but I recomend:
- Biber's Rosary Sonatas (Manze)
- Mattheson's Der Brauchhare Virtuoso (12 sonate per violono overo faluto solo col continuo, Alpha -www.alpha-prod.com-)

This may be out of topic, but I want to warn you not to get "Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (Double Concertos)" by Issac Stern due to its poor recording quality (despite the fact that it claims the "recording was mastered using 20-bit technology for 'high definition sound'.") The first 3 tracks of Disc 2 just sound horrible (probably recorded elsewhere). The other tracks sound better, but not anywhere near great.

I've been listening to a set of the Vivaldi sonatas by a group called Cordaria. It's a very genteel, restrained and classical performance. I haven't heard any other versions but I would guess this would be the direct opposite of Manze. Personally I find the recording a bit boring although I suspect it's the material as well as the the performance. Vivaldi's Concertos are more interesting than his sonatas in my opinion.

If you want more baroque violin sonatas, here are some suggestions. I've got all of these and they are all excellent.

Biber Rosary sonatas performed by Andrew Manze:

Biber Violin Sonatas, Manze:

Pandolfi Violin Sonatas, Manze:

Tartini Violin Sonatas, Locatelli Trio (I haven't heard the Manze verion):

Telemann violin sonatas performed by the Boston Museum Trio:

I personally am a big fan of the Nigel kennedy version of this recording, It rocks and for a change Kennedy is not boring like his rendition of tchaikovsky and sibelius Violin Concertoes which were emotionless and not very exciting
