Violectric HPA V550 - Blue's Brother and the successor to the V281

Look like my old Schiit Gungnir Multibit can not keep up with my new Violectric V550 I can feel the dac is limiting the amp. Time to save more money to upgrade to a higher dac. I have got my eyes on the Weiss dac 205 for a long time from it is released.

The big improvement of the V550 when comparing to my old Monoprice THX is the soundstage. The soundstage expands a lot and have more air more places more separations.

Is it the A1 or A2 version? Is it connected via XLR? What don't you like about the combo now or in what way do you perceive the limitations?

My Schiit Gunnir Multibit is an A2 version with Schiit USB5 not the Unision version. I want to upgrade because the Schiit Gunnir Multibit I feel like the soundstage has a width but not much of the depth and sound sometime sounds so smooth and boring, lacking some details, texture. Still a good R2R dac but I want to try something else. I still use RCA connections but planning to upgrade to XLR connections.

I would agree, the V222 however is no slouch, some may even prefer the more mids forward non fatigue presentation of the V222 over the V550. I would also say that the V222 tends to be more compatible with headphones compared to the V550 synergy-wise.
Why you say so? The V550 pairs well with everything as long as you are willing to appreciate its brutal honesty!!

a) get a good transport, Gen 5 is rather limiting
b) get XLR cables

evaluate again

+1 for the XLR suggestion, I am not 100% sure about Gungnir A2 but many DAC's output the better signal via XLR, so it may not only be the cables but the output, I use super cheap ($26.25 x 2) Belden 1800F 1.5ft XLR interconnects from bluejeans cables and have very good results, if you still don't like the sound then only consider an upgrade.

Gungnir's XLR outputs are definitely better than the RCA

I've got my eye on the V281 too, still waiting for updates on it's release.
Very early in this V281 reissue, I closed my eyes and placed that order.

One doesn't get many opportunities to ride the same magic carpet twice.

Did anyone in the US order their V550 from Thomann and get hit with customs fees?

I got it from Thomann (from the US), but I am *not* a US citizen so UPS asked me to fill a form and my passport and custom fees was waived for me, so anything > $2500, customs has to be paid (if you are US citizen), I got the Pro I think the non-Pro you dont have to pay if price+shipping < $2500.
