Does any portable player have USB out? And if not do PDAs have one?

Wouldn't it be a smart idea to use the USB out to get from a portable player to an amp? This would save me the money for a good IC which is, for as far as I know, way more expensive than any USB cable.

This way I could use a PDA as a portable player without having to worry so much about the quality of the IC connecting the two and I would get similar SQ as when I would connect it to say a laptop or a computer. Right?

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone tried this before and how did it work out?

If you mean a digital out, then yes, some irivers have them. I cant remember what the model number it is but look for one that has a digital out, thats what you're looking for.

I dont think any other player (that you can still purchase) have them except the iriver.

I don't think there is an audioplayer with this feature. It would need a USB-Host feature but all the players which can be connected via USB are slaves. Afaik there are only very few image tanks that can do USB-Host with cardreaders - maybe this would also work with a USB-Amp but I highly doubt it.

The ETEN M600/G500 PDA Phones do have USB Host drivers. Some Toshiba PDAs I saw either.
There are also some attempts to use the USB on newer HTC devices in Host mode (take a look at xda-developers.com).
Anyway. Even if you get the USB Port running in Host mode on your new PDA, I never saw a USBAUDIO driver for WinCE anywere (did not look for it though) plus on some (Maybe most) devices you will not be able to power the DAC/Amp via the USB connector.

I think X5 has this feature. It comes with a special connector to serve as USB-Host.

Wouldn't a digital out serve the same purpose?

That would require an expensive IC right? Or am I wrong about that?

So I would require a mini-to-mini USB cable? Does that exist?

Man.. I realise I don't know anything about portables..

What the hell are you people talking about?

There is no such player with a USB Host mode than that a USB DAC can connect to. All USB dacs require a PC/Laptop running Windows\Linux\Macintosh.

There are very few players with optical outs, comprised of the Iriver H100 series and most mid/high end portable DVD players. There are even fewer portable amps that have optical inputs (the Headline and the Headroom Micro Dac are one of the few, there are some DIY ones I think). They require interconnects, type "optical audio cable" into Google to see what they look like.

So that's why I asked the question. I don't know of them. Hence my second question: Would this work with a PDA?
