'Unconventional' DACs and their place in your world

So what do I mean by 'unconventional'? By 'unconventional', I mean the use of other Audio Visual products intended for other uses to be purely used as a DAC. See, I'm investigating the use of old MiniDisc players to be purely used as a DAC. Why? cuz well, even low-end Minidisc players can be rated above supposedly 'great value' DACs on here.

We had the Playstation 1 DAC popularity of old....
 
So would you consider this unconventional use of products?
All this talk about dedicated stuff when there could be a wide world of stuff out there, only it's not obvious. Discuss.
