Dear community, I am looking for help in order to build a setup that I can use everywhere I go for a long-term project.
I work as a field engineer and despite having a great home theatre + TV and all the goodness I am sadly never at home.
I've now decided to make my life better by building a more or less good setup in the new place I live every time I start a new project more likely in a new country that won't be easy to move my own stuff, I also find better to buy something new in the new country and selling or gifting it than going through the hassle of travelling with everything every time I go for rest and come back.
Currently, I am listening to music/movies with the 64audio U12t and a small portable DAC/AMP EIDA 9038D or Hidiz S9 Pro, but I don't enjoy IEMs as much... (another story).
I am buying the HD800S as it appears very good for the music I listen to most of the time at work or home, mostly (classical, orchestras, and movie soundtracks) which is also the case for the games I enjoy the most.
If you were to build the almost best mobile (not so big, not so heavy...) experience what would you buy in terms of audio interface hardware? Assuming these conditions:
Most TVs are offering HDMI eARC and optical for audio output.
Movies are mostly streamed from renowned apps (Apple TV, Netflix, etc..).
Games = PS5 which only provides an HDMI for Video & Audio.
Headphones = HD800S
I would say the only best option is to take the audio from the optical output of the TV? Since receivers are the way too big and heavy.
PS5 > TV > DAC/AMP > HD800S, do you know if this would work or if there's a better option?
Then the infamous question
Which DAC/AMP? I know there are 1000 answers on the internet for this, but I will say that of course I won't be buying any other headset and I don't want to pay for the 1-10% improvement, there are some deals on some mostly expensive ones here in Greece, but if they are worth it as a long term purchase I might just get it.
RME ADI 2 DAC is an option on sale, there are some people selling used HDV 820 for 1,000$ and of course, there are the sound blasters and most known brands... I haven't found a store where I can test DAC/amps so I have no idea if they are necessary or not, I know the EIDA 9038D I used on the IEMs are good, but in this case, the audio is coming from the Phone most of the time.
