So I've searched everywhere I could for criteria of a goos sound quality on eraphones and I didn't find any. well, what is important for me, most of all, is details. I'm looking for something with high fidelity to frequency, high dynamic range, low cross-talk on stereo and low distortions. what I listen to is mostly melodic trip-hop and black/doom metal. Can anyone help?

Etymotic ER-4 Series.

The choice of Sound Engineers for over 20 years. Period.

IMHO, Jim

thanks for the reply. any other suggestions?

for \m/etal music, I usually use Logitech Ultimate Ears UE700 (might as well go with Logitech Ultimate Ears Triple Fi 10) because the in ear fit is very great.

Heir Audio 3.Ai or 4.Ai. Depending if you want a more "fun" sound with the 3.Ai or a more "detailed" sound with the 4.Ai. Plus they look beautiful.

Sony mdr ex1000. They are by far the best iem's I've ever owned. They are listed way down in the rankings in the head gear section but it's probably because they were too expensive for most people. You could get an entry level custom for what they were selling for but now that sony came out with the xba series you can get them for closer to 300 than 500.

As for universals, so far from what I have owned, I would say: Westone 4, Sony mer-ex1000 and Shure se 535 LTD.
I have to say I would give ex1000 extra vote for its superb sound quality and airy presentation. Yet, W4 is my personal favorite universal as it is very forgiving and easy to listen to, I can wear those babies for hours without feeling any fatigue, ex1000 is a bit too 刺激 for long session listening. EX1000 is almost 90% as good as the expensive AKG K3003.

As for Customes, I vote for westone es5 and JH13. UERM is also good as a perfectly neutral  monitor but it is a bit less revealing than the previous 2 and not as detailed (though they are already super detailed compare to any other universals and customs).

I would add a vote for Westone 4[r] and Shure 535.

The ER-4 are also great but I find them awkward/fragile for portable, carry-around applications. They also tend to generate more cable noise (microphonics) than Westone or Shure.

hahaha, ER-4 definitely a great ear-piece but these are the worst headphone for the music genre choice of OP's

ER-4P
on Doom Metal = all the heaviness is gone
on Black Metal = those Dark Throne/Burzum's extreme underground mixed records can really hurt your ears more
on Trip-Hop = all the sub bass gone.

all I can say is, for the genres OP's said.
Trip-Hop/Doom Metal/Black Metal are all about the dark atmosphere, I would want the headphones has great body weight and smooth and dark

I would seek for a pair or earphones with
1. good extension of sub-bass, a bit low mid hump for more punch.
2. smooth high end, slight rolled off is ok
3. bit scooped mid preferably(more open soundstage, more body/punch at low end)

with all these quality, I would recommend

Universal IEM
Westone 3, UE Triple-Fi 10, Shure SE535

Custom IEM
JH5 Pro, Westone ES5

Sony MDR-7550, Tralucent 1Plus2, AKG3003, Sennheiser IE80, FX700. Naming the top 3 is a very subjective point of view. You will get a lot of mixed views. You can do a search using the search function to pull up threads. I'll post some links below
