Actually, haven't we gone around on this before? The remote controls a motor on the knob, and turns the knob. That's all there is to it. That's how the Creek works (though it's not a stepped attenuator, I don't see why you can't replace it, as long as the motor is strong enough to get past the "clicks"). I do believe there actually is a high-end pre that does this...
