The discovery thread!

My discovery today: DSD files.

So I downloaded some DSD samples from NativeDSDMusic to see what the meme is about. I’m surprised that I hear a noticeable difference in the spatial illusion when comparing the same track with my FLAC copy. The placement of instruments is the same, but each instrument feels more “real” in the space, and separation and layering are stronger.

DSD consumes a lot of storage space and PITA to collect, so I would pretend that I haven’t heard anything.
Yeah. I did the same, and yeah, the DSD files do sound wider and more spatial, and dare I say, transparent, but yeah, they are huge, and I just lost interest, so back to FLAC I went.

That Mangird set is so pretty.

And yeah, Z1R is one of the few DD woofers that I consider “yeah, DD is superior”. The other ones are Hiby Zeta and 64 Audio Trio / Fourte. Other than that, personally, I’ll take Symphonium BA woofer implementation anytime.

Edit: forgot the dual DD in Monarch III and AuR Audio Aurora

They will lower the prices eventually. Even now Trio sells on Ali for 19$ already (off from ~25$ from most stores + coins discount and 2$ anniversary coupon).

The only thing that bothers me and put my Trio purchase on hold until next sale - if Trio is really comparable to Rhapsody in terms of sound, why it dropped in price so fast (25ish bucks even before Ali sale started)?
Bro, the Trio is fantastic, absolutely lives up to the hype, and you delaying the purchase is only hurting your ears and satisfaction, and nothing else.

The thing the Trio is doing for me in regards to my other sets, is that it's spatialness and encompassing stage and transparency is making stuff like the Wu, N5005, and OD200 feel closed in. Now the OD200 is way more refined overall, and you can tell it's more expensive, and comes across so, but when I bounce from the Trio to these other sets, I start missing that spatiality that the Trio is supremely tuned for. Now you can tell by listening to the Wu or the OD200 that the tuning is much more even handed and "mature", but if you're not really tuned into that style or if you're just listening to fun or for detail and being enveloped, the Trio is a champ for that, and the only IEM that has a similar approach tuning wise is the Aure, but not much else.

2024 Spring Survey - Top 3 IEMs

First thanks to all for participating, we had a total 42 participants. What is interesting is seeing how many different IEMs have been entered, 91 in total. Plenty of IEMs with only one 1 vote, clearly shows how we all differ in either what we prefer or maybe what we can afford to buy.

Average cost of all the IEMs is $608, this is something I did not expect. Had expected that the average to be at least halved. Quite a few sets that push up the average cost, also the sets with the most votes being close to the $600.

This is all the sets that got 2 or more votes, also interesting seeing that the top 3 all have 6 votes each. They are also fairly new models.

Here I just added up the brands with 3 or more entries, AüR Audio having the most with 14 entries. But if we count Penon together with ISN and TSMR it's a total of 21, this is since all the brands are owned by Penon.

I tried my best counting and using excel to get data gathered, I am human so I wouldn't be shocked if I made an error somewhere.

Interesting. First time I see Penon in the papers.

I didn't know they owned TSMR.

Crinacle’s gigolo is here!

Yeah, just like @Resolve ’s experience , I have a lot of difficulty getting these seal correctly with stock tips. I will need something sticky to lock the earpieces in place. The fit reminds me of FiiO FD11 and FH11.

@DynamicEars you should see this IEM in person. The venting is fascinating. Truly no filter. In fact the LCP diaphragm (I assume) is fully exposed.

Edit: Hiby’s silicone tips to the rescue. I have good seal now. Yup. It’s good.

Edit 2: R3ii + Snowy Night as the chain, lossless FLAC.

Edit 3: everything is good until, maybe, 8kHz. I wish there is a bit more upper treble. It doesn’t help that I have been daily driving Symphonium IEMs in the last several weeks so my ears are primed to expect treble extension.

Thoughts so far?
I've written above. Quoted below:

Ordered one last cable, and now I rest until the next AE sale. Bank account is very unhappy with me tbh.
