The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

After spending some more time between the cans, these are definitely keepers. The 880/600 is "the little headphone that could." I think I prefer the timbre to that of my Sennheiser HD660S, plus there's a dynamism and attack (especially in the upper mids and treble) that the Sennys can't touch.

One thing I will say: the AutoEq file for the 880 is a complete disaster. Most of my other headphones, AutoEq is quite good, but for the 880 I'll stick to unequalized music thanks.

The dynamism and attack is one of the Beyer traits, all the Beyers I’ve tried have it, some more than others. Senns just don’t have the dynamism and attack of Beyers. Honestly need to revisit the DT 880 some day. I recently tried the DT 900 Pro X and while I like it, the headband comfort was a no go for me sadly (would’ve kept it otherwise).

I’ve had bad luck with pre-made EQ profiles on Beyers. I’ve had to EQ them myself, though I usually keep them on their stock tuning.

EQ'ing the DT770 was mandatory when I had one. The sibilance of an untreated DT770 could tear through tissue paper.

I agree with your comparison between the 880 and the 6** (in my case, 650). In my case, the clarity, space and lack of bass bleed also help.

As for the auto EQ thingy. In its defense, you are running the "Black Edition" profile. It is a different version of the 880 that you might not be using. The tuning is different for them, so I am guessing the goal is for the EQ as well.

you can take a look at these EQ presets from oratory1990 https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_presets/ , use the appropiate one for your model, i have the DT880 Blackedition and the corresponding presets works fine for me (tho i have tuned it further)
i think they are included in AutoEQ too but maybe you dont use them

what you didnt like in specific with the presets? maybe i can help out, i tried around a lot since i also dont like the preset (or harman curve in specific) that much stock (tho its still better than stock DT880)
i also tried measurements of a few "companys" and for me the oratory1990 measurements/corrections were the best

High impedance cans usually do well with this, due to their very lightweight voice coils.

It's a shame more brands are shunning high impedance drivers in headphones, as to me they sound excellent (especially in terms of transient response).

Seems like such a simple formula, but I guess manufacturers are prioritizing easy-to-drive designs for portable use. There is hope though: Fiio's new FT3 is 350 ohms. They didn't have to do that - in fact given Fiio's deep roots in portable gear I'm quite surprised they did that - but someone on the product team decided there's a big enough market of people who use phases like "listening station" or "scales well"

Yeah that's the only one in the default list in Wavelet, and I haven't gotten around to importing/customizing another profile yet.

I just stumbled across Zeos' review of the 880/600 and he makes it sound like you need a small nuclear reactor to drive these.

Dude sure loves his drama.

The Schiit Vahalla 2 OTL tube headphone amp is great little nuclear reactor for them.
I'm itching to pair these with an OTL tube amp, but in the meantime my SMSL HO200 seems to drive them with plenty of authority.

(cranking some classic Rush right now)

I read about the 880 600 ohm headphones here and I can't believe how good they perform for the price. Hell, any price.

I haven't really used mine since I got them because I don't have a good amp for them. Going to have to get my hands on a Schiit Valhalla one of these days
