The Beyerdynamic DT250 Thread

dakanao,
the geek out 450 is definitely a dac/amp that swings toward neutral with only a slight touch of warmth so it won't skew the dt250-250 too much towards that sound you are looking for but experiment with that jdslabs cmoy. Its only 50 bucks. Connect it from your go450 higher output impedance line out jack to the cmoy and it will give some bloom to the dt250-250. Cmoy designs like 250/300ohm cans. They are the cheapest way to handle those cans properly while adding warmth.

I finally got me a pair of DT250-250 after trying a few other candidates while looking for a reasonably priced and balanced closed headphone. I did purchase and returned the Audio Technica MSR7 (shouty and not enough dynamic to my ears), Nad Viso HP50 (etheric sound, lack of body similar to electrostats, too big soundstage) and lately the Beyer DT150-250 (comfort was the culprit). I am burning them in at the moment, and will give some impressions after getting to know them better ! But they surely do sound impressive at this price (143€ from Thomann)

I had little time in fact with the DT150, but I felt they were more "fun" to listen and toe tapping. What stood out for me on the DT150 was the extra weight in the low end (albeit not as much as I thought, because I feel the DT250 bass response and extension is actually impressive as well) and a slightly bigger soundstage, giving more air to the music. My only "very slight" complain regarding both the DT150 & DT250 would be the medium-highs, which I perceive a bit clearer than usual (i.e a bit cold), although not withdrawn. I find this noticeable with female focals... Both have had less than 100 hours of burn-in, so this might also change over time.

I like the sound signature of the DT 150 more than the DT 250, but the DT 250 has a smoother, more natural, cleaner sound. They just lack lower midrange presence to me to make the music sound upfront and engaging, and the DT 150 has a more forward sound.

Reporting back after a few more hours of use. Since I was bothered by the very slightly bright upper mids/treble balance of the 250 ohms version, which didn't seem to go away after 100 hours of burnin, I instead got me the 80 ohms version.
And I am glad I did. The 80 ohms version with my sources (Audio gd NFB28 and ME2) and my ears has less emphasize or a better balance in this upper range, while the bass and mid response remains apparently the same. The midrange is so clear and almost lifelike, which might be the older Beyerdynamic sound signature. They certainly remind me in some ways the midrange of my DT48.
I have to admit that they are just perfect for my current needs. I also purchased a pair of Sony MDR7520 known for their accuracy and good comfort, but while a tiny bit more resolving and offering better instrument separation, I simply prefer the DT250 balance and vividness to the sweeter/more colored MDR7520. I find the DT250 quite special as well in its spatial presentation, somehow projecting the sound more in front without requiring any crossfeed, at least compared to other headphones.
Those headphones are exceeding by far what I expected from them. Brilliant !

Have you heard 7506? I like it but it doesn't seem to respond well enough to amplification, wonder if 7520 is any different in this regards. I like the Sony but am considering DT250. 7506 ticks the sound signature box though, just not enough clarity..

Sorry, no. I have heard the Sony CD900ST and ZX700 only. However, I think the 7520 is quite different from the 7506, but I am not sure what you mean by clarity. You might want to ask this question on the 7520 thread.

For those interested, I am selling a new 3 meters straight cable for the DT250 (ref WK250.07 original beyer parts) in the FS forum. I am also willing to pass my DT250 to someone else, since I mostly use the Audioquest Nightowl now. Cheers

I have the DT250 for a couple of years now and I enjoy it the most out of any of my headphones, it has a very balanced sound with a nice tight (not overpowering) punchy bass that makes it great for any music genre, I also find the depth very good. I prefer it over my DT150, HD600, Yamaha MT220 & MT8.

I am also intersted in the CD900st & MDR 7520...
How does for example the CD900st compare with the DT250?

From memory, I much prefer the DT250 over the CD900ST. The Sony had a very sweet midrange, slightly forward, but was tonally a bit bright to my ears, and lacked dynamic and low end impact. It reminds me in some ways the Audio Technica MSR7.

The MDR7520 is another beast altogether. I use it regularly, especially when away from home. Great balance, with a slightly tilted bass range (around 80-120Hz) making it sometimes really fun to listen to (toe tapping and engaging), sweet and slightly colored midrange (maybe not as much as the CD900ST), and great instrument separation. Isolation is also better than the DT250. A perfect companion for portable use IMO.

I have my DT250 currently on sale :beerchug:
I find the MDR7520 is the more practical headphone for portable use (the standard 3,5mm cable is really a nice feature). Now, with a home set up, that is a tougher call... IMO, It would depend on the rest of the components (DAC+AMP). The DT250 sounds very good almost out of anything and does not scale much. The MDR7520 can reveal much more. That is a factor I would consider.

This VST crossfeed/speaker sim plugin goes well with DT250: hdphx.dll
It doesn't even have a GUI, it's very basic. Boosts the bass a bit as well.
