I have a Matrix M stage HPA 2 connected to an amplifier and that to speakers. What is the best volume setting for a Matrix HPA 2 USB DAC when using with RCA output. Have no idea about this. Trying different volume levels.

It's meant to be the main volume control and you only hook up a power amplifier, not an integrated amplifier with its own volume control.

If you have a power amp hooked up or an integrated amplifier that has an amp stage direct input (note this is not the same as a button that says "amp direct" on the front), use whatever volume level that 1) doesn't piss off your neighbors or other people in the house and 2) doesn't cause hearing damage, as loud as it goes. If you want to be more certain, use a dB meter (note that smartphones apps are not exactly that accurate), run a 1000hz test tone, and then go up to 88dB (slightly louder for short bursts, like your favorite tracks). The problem though is that even with that measurement variances in recording levels will mean that properly recorded music will play properly with the test tone and everything else will be too loud in comparison.

So basically go as loud as you can that you can listen continuously without any ringing in your ears for one hour, then dial it down a little for all succeeding sessions.
