I've been digging Joan Baez lately. Unfortunately I didn't really have much exposure to female vocalists growing up, so I don't know of anyone who even compares.

Brandi Carlile is one of my favorites - she has a soulful voice and her songs are pretty deep. I love Rilo Kiley (Jenny Lewis) for their eclectic style, and currently really into Missy Higgins.
