Hello Teton fellows,

Reading about high impedance convenience regarding the Teton, what about driving the Focal Utopia ?? (acclaimed for its trebles but less impact of the lows).

I could def. see hd800 type amps working really well with Utopia. The ohm's go up when you get to listening level like the hd800. It is not so much the ohm output but the voicing of the amps. The Teton is def. an hd800 type amp. Makes the hd800 sound and feel like a $3k+ headphone.

Just to contribute some to this thread, those who haven't tried it- the 6336 sounds better as an output tube for the Apex Teton than the 6528 to my ears. They both draw a lot of heat, but interestingly the 6336 has much higher output impedance.

Also, has anyone used 2x or 3x 6bl7/6bx7 with an adaptor, as an output tube? It sounds great on my Glenn OTL.

Got confirmation from Pete that it was okay to do 3x 6BL7 as a replacement for the 6AS7G tube, and in it went.

Sounds really good with the HD800. I think this is here to stay for a while.

My current favourite combination is the U52 rectifier, 3xSylvania 6BL7 (output) and 1578 tube (input). The 6BL7 and the 1578 really add a lot to the sound. The 1578 is clear and airy, a great input tube, albeit a bit hard to get hold off. Make sure you get the ones with five holes- many fakes on fleaBay.

Yes I agree, the 1578 is a fine tube with just the right amount of air. I alternate between this and a Marconi B65. The 6BL7 are a bit harder to get hold of in the UK but I will keep looking.

I also alternate between the two, as it so happens! The B65 is a different take- but both are nice.

Brought home my dad's Grado SR60 this evening for what I thought would be a quick dismissive listen, still listening to them now as I type 3 hours later.
If I remember correctly chengka7 posted earlier in the thread about how impressed he was with this pairing. Never been a fan of the Grado phones but this is very satisfying. So far I have been listening to jazz, vocal and acoustic music but will try some ambient electronic next.
Using a Sylvania 7326 output but will have to try a 6528 which might be a slightly better match for low z cans.

Hi all,

I'll probably post this as a separate thread, but I want to give some thoughts/impressions on the Teton/HD800 pairing - based on the Dubstepgirl HPguru review. I bought the Teton, along with the USAF 596, Tung Sol 5998, and metal base Sylvania 6SN7W tubes, and others. Ended up favoring the 6528 over the 5998. HOWEVER - tube rolling is all in vain, I PEQ'ed this complement to neutral, and frankly I cannot believe how people praise the sound of these amp/HP combos otherwise. With my PEQ, the sound is unbelievable, velvety, smooth, full ranged. As an example, I was modding a pair of HD6XX with wood cups, and quite enjoying them, I was listening to Ulver's Assassination of Julius Caesar coming home on my portable rig (Hugo2). When I got home, I transferred to my home chain (plugged the Hugo2 to Teton-HD800) and turned on the PEQ I had been tweaking for the HD800 - and OMG, it's night and day, basically like going from rags to silk, well, to be honest, it sounded immediately better, but the real revelation was going back to the plain un'EQd HD6XX - what sounded amazing on the way over, now was harsh, loud, mids too forward, lacking treble details, bass too boomy.

I'll be honest, I've PEQ'd other headphones before, and adding the Teton has made that easier for my HD800, but in truth, I once again find that, assuming one gets a nice headphone and decent enough amp, learning to PEQ to neutral is probably the most important step to truly great sound. I am amazed with my PEQ-Hugo2-Teton-HD800 chain now, and I wonder if even some of these reviewers have ever heard such a great sound, with their as-is gear. Wish I could get my hands on a HE-1 rig...

Interesting, in my case using any sort of DSP slightly degrades the sound with the Teton. I'm using HD650M and HD800 and the sound is already amazing. I'm not a fan of the 5998 or WE421 in the Teton as well.

Cool, maybe I should clarify that PEQ is software from Neutron MP - my home chain is : FLAC - (Galaxy S5) Neutron MP PEQ, bypass Android direct to USB - Hugo 2 - Teton - Custom Norne cable (Hi Trevor! lol) - HD800.

And because this is the Teton thread, pic of when I just got the amp and was trying it out:
