Pretty sure Razordogaudio can get either for you cheaper than that!

You're right and $400 is more tempting but I'd rather pay $300-$350. Or less!

The K702/65, was around $360 for MONTHS... you checked too late.

The 65th is just a pad change of the K/Q701 so I'm not surprised some people didn't hear much of a difference.

using the term "K/Q701" in this context is kinda wrong,
because Q701 doesn't sounds like K701 or K702.
not to mention it is the anni's that you are referring  to.

it would be more correct if you say anni's are just a pad change of Q701.
however that pad change should bring some obvious change in the lows.

and actually I am very surprised people can't hear a difference between Q701 and Anni's, even though Anni's might just a a pad change.

K702 65th are K702 with pads from K712.

Anyway, I changed op-amps in my essence one (downgrade from muses :p) to LME49720NA (I/V) and LM4562NA (buffer) and my god, they are detailed. Separation of instruments is great. Bass is still punchy but (finally) not overwhelming other frequencies and feels very natural.

Don't think that's true. Should be Q701 with Annie/712 pads. This is according to Chicolom and several others. Q701 is a little warmer/fuller sounding than the K702.

K702 with memory foam pads probably wouldn't sound identical to the Annie but maybe very close. Probably less warm and a little brighter.

So far nobody has found a K702 that sounds identical in sound to the Q701. Some thought there was maybe a driver revision in the last year.

BTW I think the difference between the Q701 and Annie is larger overall than K702 to Q701. Does anyone else agree? I'm not talking just bass. If you like the K702 you'd probably like the Q701. If you like the Q701 there's a good chance you might not like the Anniversary. I'm surprised AKG managed to make a Q701/K701 variation that I didn't actually like all that much.

I am just saying what I read in service manual. K702 and K702 65th have the same driver (even with the same part number).

you are wrong.
Anni's are Q701 + memory pads.
Not K702 + memory pads.

and btw i am not sure if K712 uses the same pads as the Anni's
so you might be wrong about that too.

you didn't get the whole picture.
the problem is even Q701 is also using this same drivers, it was able to create a very different sound.
that is the magic and no one knows why.

and Anni's are Pad-Moded based on the tweaked Q701,
not K702.

saying they are all the same just because they use the same parts is incorrect.

I have seen some people state the Q701 and K702 sounding the same. Tyll is one of them...

I have yet to hear a standard K702. Old 7 bump K701 (dry, analytical, and just...sterile). Two Q701s (warmer and more musical than the K701, still lacking in bass for me), and a legit K702 Anniversary (noticeably more bassy than all three of the others, as well as warmer and flatter in balance)

thanks for the info.
from reading the frequency graph comparing Q701/K702,
I believe they have quite a difference especially at the upper frequencies.

Tyll said:
After seeing the measurement data I would say that other than the cosmetic differences, both headphones are identical. The slight differences observed could possibly be accounted for by the added "Q" badge on the outside of the earcup behind the driver, and improved manufacturing processes over time.

This ^^. The K/Q70X and Annie are all the same driver. The only differences are pads and some damping felt. They measure about the same when parts are swapped. The K712 I'm not sure about. But from the looks of things here it's just another repackage.

Oh they measure the same when parts are swapped? You want to point out these measurements to us? They don't exist! People claim they know what causes the differences but there is really no proof of anything. Just people guessing. I hope we find out eventually.

I wish I could turn my Q701 into a K702 by removing the foam on it's outer grill but it's impossible. The K702 and Q701 both using the same foam behind the pads.

I would love to see someone turn their K702 into a Q701 just by swapping out outer grills and adding a piece of foam.

My guess is that the Q701 just uses "special" version of the K702 driver in production, but when you get a replacement driver it's highly unlikely it will sound the same. Anyone want to add a K702 capsule to a Q701 for testing?

Yes, I know it's all the same part numbers etc.

For the longest time the only idea I had was it's due to the outer grill and foam, but this seems to small to make such a audible difference. When you remove the outer grill and foam it still sounds like a Q701.

There could be some internal modifications that we just can't see.

There is always a small chance AKG made a K702 driver revision right around when the Q701 came out.

BTW have you seen this? K701 and K702 are like 99% the same here:

I think you're correct about putting the Annie pads on the K702. I recently purchased a used Annie from eBay. According to the seller they are a few months old with minimal use. After receiving them and listening a little, I tried the Annie pads on my K702. I had exactly the same reaction you postulated above. The bass did come up some and while not as bright as with their standard pad, they still had a somewhat bright high end compared to the Annie. The bass was not quite to the level of the Annie, maybe 1 dB lower-enough anyway to tell the difference. But to my ear, my K702 with Anni pads did not sound identical to the Anni. I don't remember anyone talking about break-in, but I can confirm my K702 bass did improve after 200hours of use. I'm confident my K702 is performing as well as it can.

I am breaking in my Anni now to see if the sound changes. With maybe 50 hours they do sound clearer and less 'stiff'. Want to get 200 hours on them for a final judgment. However, from the start I prefer the Annie over the K702. There is more bass which I suppose may be what puts the highs in better balance. They sound very balanced to me. I would say the bass is truly 3 dB more than my K702. If the K712 has 3 dB more than the Anni, it would be too much bass for me. Can't believe AKG would do that as we would seem to be getting into 'basshead' territory.

To put another fly in the ointment, I just purchased a Q701 on eBay. Should receive it hopefully by the end of the week. It only has 25 hours on it according to the seller, so there will be more break-in to do. If the Q701 has a little more bass than my K702, I will most likely keep it and sell the K702. Mad Lust Envy may want to try it as he says he has never heard a K702.

I did notice in the Inner Fidelity review that Tyll said the thicker part of the angled pad on the Q701 goes toward the rear. I thought it went on the bottom? And I should mention I am using a Moon Audio Blue Dragon cable instead of the stock cable.
