I realize that the honeymoon on any FOTM headphone will come to an end. What troubles me is this sudden backlash against the K701. Half the people coming down harshly on it are not even owners and may have heard them briefly in a meet. There seems to be some sickly delight in bashing the current FOTM and reverting back to the HD650 as superior. Different yes, superior maybe to some and certainly not to me. I was just wondering why all the bashing these days.

Usually from people that are trying to "make" the 650 seem superior in light of Tyll picking the K701 on level or above the 650 and a thread where more people preferred the K701 to the 650. That's a possibility.

Isn't the just the head-fi way of life? I haven't been a forum member for long, but that seems to be the way things work around here.

-- edit --
Or maybe it's 650 owners who want the 650s to remain as the best >$500 pair of headphones, and don't want anyone to take that away from them. They don't want to feel inferior.

Nah....you're all just hyper sensitive. People sometimes have strong personalities and can't control what they say or how they could be more tactful. It's just a matter of taste too. 90% of the stuff posted here are opinion. Thing i can't understand is why get worked up over it.

For the record, i don't own either k701 or hd650. I've listened to both. I like both. I choose the hd650 cos it's more comfy to me.

Last I heard GS-1000 was the FOTM. Time allocated for that spot is finite. There's no absolute positive mandate on them either.

I guess it's the natural & normal course of things - raved about and eulogized at first, then suddenly dragged in the dust. Ah, ephemeral celebrity.

Just because a good number of people prefer the HD650 to the K701 does not mean there is an underlying psychological agenda by HD650 owners. These people simply prefer the HD650, and you have to respect that.

It's just as easy to say that K701 fans have an underlying psychological agenda of needing to constantly be finding the latest greatest things, and are pretending the K701 is the latest and greatest simply to satisfy their needs. They are comparable to indie music people--always having to find the best undiscovered thing.

It's easy to go that route, but cowardly. Just accept that some prefer the HD650 and some people prefer the K701. I haven't heard the K701, but it certainly doesn't threaten me as an HD650 listener. But if I do end up preferring the HD650, it'd make me mad if people gave my opinion no weight and said I was just a lunatic with a psychological agenda to push.

Certainly the period of massive postings is over, though there are periods when K701 mania sets in again. When polls appear, the K701 is usually regarded quite warmly, and thought to be on the same level as the HD650.

They're a different style headphone, obviously.

Has anyone recabled their HD650 or K701's with Nordost Valkyrja?

As far as opinions and reviews are concered, they will only tell you so much about an item. Let your ears and your wallet be the deciding factor regardless of what others may think.

I have the HD600 and K701 and I prefer the K701. Neither is better just different! I should receive by the end of the month a Headphile Senn V2 cable, I will see what it does to the sound.

By the way, I am one of those who has the RS-1 and love it. Received the GS1000 and from day one did not like it. I will be returning it shortly after 300 hours of burn in of which 2 hours are of listening time on my head.

The K701, being my first better headphone (with 400+ hours of usage), is not something for me as I've found out. I'll stick to my CD3k, and I want to try HD650 an 600 for some change.

What is it that you don't like? I'm the other way round - I have the 650 and love the warmth and the 'fruity' bass but sometimes want a bit more in the treble region so I've been considering the 701.
