I am going to get my first "expensive" headphone !
I listen to Electronica, Dubstep and a bit of everything else, especially when I get a new pair :)
I like a thump in the bass but moderate texture and detail. Bass Extension is important. I like my mids nice and crisp and textured while maintaining smoothness . Bright is better than dark for me.
My source is my Sony Walkman -> Pioneer Reciever ( Powered a friends 650's with superb SQ) or my Sony Walkman -> Fiio E6!
Open or closed
Comfy but that is not a main focus
Build should be average, not fragile cans!
And i will not go any higher that 300.
New, not used!
And i live in Canada so it is a tad more pricey!

Ever heard any V-Moda?

V-Moda M100 sounds like what you are looking for.

$600 is probably too much for portable closed full-sized headphones (and too little for the super-high end closed headphones that run around $1,000+), but it opens you up a lot of very highly reviewed high-end open full-sized headphones.

For $600 closed headphones, you can look at the modded Fostex T50RP named Paradox for $495+. Mr. Speaker also does a modded Fostex T50RP named Mad Dogs for $300. Denon AH-D600 is another closed pair at $380ish. Sony MDR-7520 is around $360-400.

at $600 for open headphones, you can afford the HE-400 $400 (almost afford the HE-500 $700), Sennheiser HD 650 $500 or sennheiser hd600 at $400. Beyerdynamic DT 880 at $350. Akg q701 at $400. Audio Technica ATH-AD2000 runs at around $600. For these headphones, you would probably want to save $100-200 to get an amp as they have a pretty high impedance.

Here are some sources to help you look into the pricing.

Note: this is purely a price compilation. I haven't heard these headphones, so I can't tell you what they sound like, but they are all highly rated & probably what you should start looking at if you jump your price range.

At $300ish, I have heard headphones such as the MDR-1R, Momentum ($350), AKG K550, Ultrasone Pro 900, and V-Moda M100 if you are curious about those.

Look into the Yamaha PRO 500. They're detailed and quite linear with impactful bass that extends nicely, beautiful mids in line with the bass, and sparkly highs without harshness up top. Should be great for your genres as well.

From what I've heard you might want to look into the Audio Technica ATH WS99.  I will be picking up a pair myself soon.
