lavasoft ad-aware is often recommended. get it at http://www.lavasoft.de/. will kill most spyware and adware. bear in mind that often spyware and adware is a prerequisite component for some supposedly 'free' software you get on the internet. some programs have silent adware which co-installs with another program without giving you any choice. my point is that if you go full out with ad aware some of your programs may not work - which is good for you in a way because now you know what's dodgy. most of the time substitutes are available - just google for them (eg kazaa lite or kazaa resurrection for kazaa)

regarding popups. some of these are rooted in programs resident on your computer; others are just part of the internet. the google toolbar has a popup killer however there are concerns that google reports your usage (albeit anonymously) to their servers.

prevention is better than cure - try googling to see if people have found/had problems with a program you intend to download and don't download it.

Thanks, I have tried the google toolbar and it worked for a while then stopped working! I have used the Spybot and didn't get a good result, is it time for me to buy the spyware-remover programs now? Why the problem is worse with the cable modem in comparison to a dial up?

that might be because your connection is always open with cable. ?

to get rid of the spy/ad-ware, use both Spybot and Ad-Aware. if that doesn't fix it, try looking up the processes you think are spy/ad-ware with Google.

to get rid of pop-ups, use Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape 7.1 (FIrefox is the best IMO!).

if that doens't help, you might have software that *needs* that stuff. or you got some other more serious problems. basically, for everything else, Google is your friend

I find spybot and ad-aware work well together as one sometimes catches things the other doesn't. Whatever you do DO NOT US ADA-WARE (NOTICE THE PLACEMENT OF THE HYPHEN.

AD-AWARE = GOOD (It's published by LavaSoft.)

ADA-WARE = VERY BAD.

I found this one by mistake when searching through google and it found ADA-WARE which claims to be a spyware removal program but actually downloads it's own spyware onto your computer. Not only that, but they have the nerve to charge for it. (when you download it, it's called SpyWare Nuker...DO NOT USE IT.)

If you've contracted a virus by chance, it could be opening the doors for all sorts of spyware to be repeatedly loaded onto your system through registry entries and cookies. If you've cleaned up with Ad-Aware and Spybot, and keep finding spyware on your system every time you boot up, you also may also have a virus.

I use Spybot's Search & Destroy. It does an excellent job of removing spyware. Wait till that Casino software burries itself in your PC. It's called N-<something> by 180degrees<something something>. It tracks your movement and puts up adds based on your surfing habits. It's absolutely incredible how it burries itself in your system. It shows up in Add/Remove programs, but tells you to download & install another piece of software to remove it (which does nothing I'm sure). You have to go into the registry and remove it manually. It's a parasite for sure. Puts up shortcuts to some online casino on your desktop & in the start menu when you restart your computer.

Very ugly indeed.

Took me a while to kill that one off, that program's a bitch to remove. As I remember the .exe files weren't that hard to find & kill off, but it buried some .dll files in the system directory as well as putting a whole bunch of crap in the registry. And if you use IE it caches itself in the temp files so that even when you kill everything it can still reload itself. This is why I'm trying to get my parents converted to Opera or Mozilla so I don't have to deal with IE's crappy security & popup exploits.

I love the Adaware & Spybot combo, Adaware is continually improving & now has very frequent updates, but Spybot has not released a new definition update in a long time now. Both are free.

I recently I added Spysweeper to the mix. Although spysweeper is not free, it currently is the best of the 3. I use all 3 to suppliment each other.

I agree with all the above. Adware with Spybot is a great combo. And I am updating my microsoft security patches too.

But, I am still pissed. I'm gonna switch to OPERA webrowser soon, but I have heard that Explorer can still be infected just by being online. I see a mac in my future. However, I hope not too many of us will switch because "they" will start attacking that next.

If your thinking of switching browsers, try Mozilla's Firebird.

Better compatibility with websites. There's quite a few websites that cause errors or display wrong on Opera for some reason. Mozilla handles them just fine except for a few pages where the inconsiderate clowns code them for IE only.
