My initial impression so far in head-fi is that the perception of soundstage is very much dependent if the source / headamp combo portrays "cold / clinical", "neutral" and "warm / musical" tuning to the music.

E.g. a "cold / clinical" source / amp combo will be perceived by most users to generate a larger soundstage than the latter options.

What is your thoughts about subject matter? Opinions much appreciated. :)

Mostly dependent on the source file I think.  I do think more treble gives the illusion of a larger soundstage though, especially if that treble has reverb to it.  It's why I can't stand sennheiser when it comes to music, it just doesn't do it for me in the soundstage department.
