I recently got some 4.4mm balanced cables for my Campfire Audio Solaris 2020 and Focal Elear to use with the Sony WM1A, and noticed that the volume is the same from the single-ended output (using a 3.5mm to 4.4mm adapter) and the balanced output. I confirmed this with a sound level meter app and a Radio Shack sound meter. I read that balanced outputs are supposed to be 6-10db louder, but looks like this is not the case with the WM1A.
Can anyone confirm this? I hope I don't have a defective unit. Although the balanced output does sound better. From my short comparisons, I noticed more clarity, deeper and tighter bass, and airier.

EDIT: I did some testing and answered my own question. The balanced output does have 6db higher sound level, but only in high gain mode. I checked the sound level at the four configurations (SE at low and high gain; balanced at low and high gain) at the same volume of "100." Here are the sound levels:

Low GainHigh Gain
Single-ended66 db71 db
Balanced66 db77 db
(Volume at "100" in all four configurations)
