I will return my zx100 (hope i can) not worht the quality of build for the price.... got a tiny visible scratch (not when screen is ON) but yes when yous hine light on the screen
In order to achieve something close to the old Sony Walkman analog sound from the 80's you need their complete setup: NW-ZX2 + PHA-3 + MDR-Z7 w/ Kimber Kable + DSD music files (the Kimber Kable and DSD rips from SACDs / downloads contribute the most to the warm sound).
ZX2 by itself sounds like their Discmans and MD Walkmans since the mid 90's, that sterile digital amp sound signature (the ZX1 with MDR-1R sounded like crap to me when I auditioned it at the Sony Store when they were still around in Canada). Even pairing the ZX2 with the E484 can't fix this (this is not a good pairing). I believe the audio chain needs to be from the same generation to get a good match up.
ZX2 in itself has the best stereo separation of any portable I've ever heard.
I wonder if the ZX2 clock and the PHA-3 clock sync with each other like how their CDP-R1 and DAS-R1 twin-link feature works (this has a clock return line from the DAC back to the CD Player).

I've no idea, but take my word for it: slap a tempered glass on the ZX2 and don't look back. Like the Dayjoy on amazon. It made the zx2 much more smoother and responsive and nore more oil finger smudges
I have a benks glass protector which works well, I even got 1 spare one in case I need it, so it's just lying around, also have a very thin case to surround the whole ZX2, my ZX2 is like 93% protected.
i'm reading about scratch removal methods for touchscreens but these are glass not plastic and sony'splastic for their LCDs on their DAPs is quite fragile.
option
1) put screen protector film as many say they can hide not so nasy screen scratches
2)2 parts of baking soda + one part water
3) tooth paste NON-WHITENING, NORMAL
4)eye glass csratch remover
i will not attempt turtle wax, sand paper and other metal polishers
Hmm. The PHA-3 is heavily promoted by Sony itself for use with the ZX2, but it seems the dedicated audio circuitry will be redundant when paired with the PHA-3, kinda weird. I've been meaning to go test it out myself, anyone have impressions of the two?
In some cases it might be hard to get a true digital out, but yah, once the PHA3 is in play it is redundant. I had a PHA 3/A17 combo with a Z7 for a few months before selling it all. Quite nice, love the PHA 3.
I have pha-3, Z7 and ZX2, I use ever Z7 in balance mode with PHA-3 and ZX2 (storage the music) for desktop combo, for mobil combo I use ZX2 with Shure 846 with silver dragon TRRS, bough combos is magic to my ears
I tried the QP1r with the original HD800.....not good! Terrible synergy because the player is so revealing and explicit...as are the headphones. To much of a good thing.
He would be better of with a zx2, the warm synergy would work well with the analytical HD800, I think, of coarse only at low to moderate volumes without an amp.

How much of an improvement is using TRRS with the 846's? And how much were the cables?
Not really feeling on spending too much on cable, since, I already have the Angie's, and I feel upgrading the 846's cables/trrs will just make them sound closer to the Angie's? (more resolving, wider soundstage, etc.)
