Found these by coincidence, looks like a big brother of the MDR-ZX600 (which are available everywhere).

Price looks good, I wonder how they sound?

I don't know the answer to your thread title's question, but Japan has been doing this for year in many areas of technology. For example there have been many 'Japan only' cameras over the years too.
I wouldn't put your hopes too high unless you're planning a trip to Japan

.... although there are a few headfiers from Japan...

These looks exactly like the new Sony MDR-V55 DJ headphones. I'm sure it's just the asthetics though and they aren't using the same drivers as the DJ headphones are very bassy which ZX series isn't (so wouldn't make sense to make ZX650 so much bassier). http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/5858/sony-mdr-v55-headphones-review

The V55 have very mixed opinions, some find the exceptionally great for the price and some think they sound very bad, don't know what to think about those personally.

The V55 is a truly awful set of cans. I'm returning them to Best Buy pronto.

I have MDR-ZX650. The sound is slightly different from ZX600 (I tested both at Yodobashi Akihabara). ZX650 is clearer and louder than ZX600. But the difference is very very little. Compared to middle or high-end headphones, ZX650 is an obvious bass-head, and mid / treble are cloudy. I use ZX650 as a testing device for assembling my own amplifier.
