I accidentally found a guys boat propeller scuba diving a public dock at 6am today. It was up in the piling cross members 5 feet from the bottom, in 20 feet of water. I was just doing my usual summer routine diving the edges of the dock not looking for his prop.

It was amazing- I got lost looked up to get my bearings and see a propeller just sitting there on the cross members. I’m thinking “Cool nice propeller” then “Wonder who lost it” Look up higher and see the empty shaft on the motor that lost it. “Oh that’s who”.

It’s paid transient mooring so it wasn’t his slip and he was just passing through. He got lucky.

I threw it up on the dock, finished the dive then went over and put it inside the his boat. It was an 18 foot bayliner.

I left a note with my phone number.

That was pretty cool finding it and returning it.

Very Cool! I've dove in the lakes around here were I live, and have come up with a few odd things myself. One Item haw a spear gun. The straps were rotten, and had to be replaced. (How the previous owner lost it is beyond me...)

That was very nice an honest of you. I hope the owner at least calls you up to thank you for the effort. I have never found anything in any of my dives, well a WWII shipwreck but everyone knew where it was. In fact I kind of suspect it was a plant to draw scuba diving tourists. Sort of like the panning for gold concession at Disneyland where everyone finds "gold".

Theirs a lake near were I live, and approx. 25~30 years ago, a tornado came through and trashed the homes on the East side of the lake. We have found table flatware while diving, but nothing else...

Sounds like fun.

Do you have a waterproof camera?
What the strangest thing you've ever found?
What the visibility like usually?

No water proof camera. That would have to be the spear gun. Visibility in the lakes (with the exception of a few spring water fed ones) is only 10~15 feet at best.

How 'bout you? (Same questions).

I don't even dive... yet.

Same questions for Mitch, too.

Next time you guys go out, bring one of those 50ft waterproof disposable cameras. I want to see some pics!

I went snorkeling on a shallow lake in Vermont. Back in the early 1900s, there was a steamboat on it that had a casino inside it, but the boat burned down and sank. I saw a very old porcelain toilet seat on the bottom, way out in the middle of the lake.
