Shure E500/E530 Cable Poll

Well, I have to say -- I was a big supporter of Shure before because their warranty was outstanding. Now, if this warranty policy change is really true, they have become just another company to me. Really sad to see.

should also create one with how long after purchase did your tip break.
serious design flaw in the shures for shure!

Edit 1: I'm thinking that people who vote "still good" should have them for at least a few months and they still look good.

And that was one of the major things they changed when they moved to the SE530. I talked to one of the Shure reps and he said they definitely addressed that already.

OK-time for me to chime in here. I just bought a brand-new pair of SE530s from Amazon. They arrived earlier today (January 26, 2008). Despite the fact that the box and accessories inside say SE530, the actual earphones are E500. Date code 2866. This means these things were manufactured in late 2006, right? Did Amazon sell me old stock or is Shure finding the E500's construction more reliable (the lesser of two evils?) than the SE530s? I'm really confused.

That's pretty odd, but I can't say I know the answer to your question. I recently got mine (sealed in box) for $305 (thanks, eBay), and they are as advertised. That brings up an interesting point, though: The E500s always came with the PTH, I believe. As such, if you buy the SE530PTH, there seems to be a chance of you getting the E500. However, with the introduction of the SE530, Shure made a PTH and non-PTH version available. I went with the non-PTH one, and got exactly what was advertised-these were made in December 2007. Dunno if that's just a coincidence, but it might mean something.

Hmmm. I totally understand that, officially, the E500=SE530, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to call Amazon and have them exchange the one I bought with bonafide SE530s, not E500s in a SE530 box. From reading virtually all of the posts in this thread, I think it's safe to say the jury's still out on whether newly manufactured ones are better than older ones. Nevertheless, all things being equal, I'd rather have "real" SE530s that were manufactured in the last 6 months rather than re-badged ones that despite being bought in 2008 were made in 2006.

I'd ask about it for sure, cafe. The warranty-difference alone is enough to make it more than worth it to ask. Hell, I'm genuinely surprised that the headphones I received were made a month ago, but I'm not complaining :teeth:.

I was under the impression that the e500 and e530 were exactly the same. Are you saying the e530 stems are more robust? I do use the new black foam tips and am a little worried that one of these days I break the stem while changing the tips.

I'm new here. Could anyone tell me where to find the original discussion on this issue? I was one of the first to get the e500 and while I don't use them much I'd like know if I need to be particularly careful about how I handle them.

That's really weird. I've never seen a case where the actual model number isn't on the plug, but if the date code is 3016, you should be fine.

Sorry, I said that very strangely. Only the very first batches of E500's were flawed in this way (faulty, fragile stems). This was fixed almost immediately, so any E500's with a date code in the latter half of 2006 should be fine (from what I was told by the Shure rep).

I'm not sure what this means but my e500s have the code 1846 SE 530 on one side of the plug and 108261 on the other side. Any idea what this means ? Strangely, I bought the e500 and, even though they are marked SE 530, I did get the original version short chord (which actually ended up being ideal since I clip my nano to my collar and the chord never gets in the way).

That is another weird date code case, but as far as I'm concerned, by July 2006 (the date yours were manufactured according to your date code), the faulty stem issue had already been taken care of for a while, so I wouldn't be worried.

Thanx for your help moseboy. I appreciate you putting my worries to rest.
