Hey guys,

I've been looking around these forums for nearly 2 years and have made several small purchases based on the overload of information that's available. This is the first time I'm spending a little more money, so I'd like to get your advice on this one.

As the title says, I'm looking to buy the MDR-1R from Sony, I currently have the opportunity to buy these for €130 (about $170) and it seems like the perfect deal. I'm looking for headphones to use on the go (train, bus, bike) and at home as well. I mostly listen to Alternative/Rock/Pop/Indie stuff but also the occasional piano or sometimes just radio. I want them to be comfortable to wear for long periods of time and it doesn't hurt if they look good as well ;p. As far as sources go, for portable use I will just use my phone and at home I've got an old school stereo system and my laptop. I don't plan on buying an amp or DAC in the near future.

So basically I think these are the perfect choice for me, but I'd love to hear of any alternatives competing in this price range.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: added some info on my sources

Have you read the reviews on Innerfidelity's wall of fame? The MDR-1R are there, as well as other headphones.

Thanks for the suggestion, I read the articles and am now even more convinced of my choice.

I agree, I've always liked Sony for its design and these headphones are certainly no exception :p. At home I currently use the HD438, which I like but I refuse to be seen outside with them because of the hideous chrome wheel plates. So that's partly the reason I'm looking for an upgrade :p (of course mostly upgrading for sound quality + portability).

So nobody has anything they would recommend over the 1R's for this pricepoint?

I haven't heard the MDR-1R. But based on that review (and ranking), I don't see how it could be a bad choice for you given the price you are getting them for.

Ok thanks guys, I just wanted to be 100% sure before making the purchase. I'll be ordering the super sleek silver version very soon!

I have heard the 1R and it was a big disapointment for me,when you turn it up a bit the mids are too much in your face and the highs and lows do not fit well in the picture send them back after 3 days.....only with dubstep i felt it was coming out strong in the bass section other styles like tech-house was not good, vocals sounded a little dull and far away with soul genre, even my ws55 sounded much better in everything, listened to the Denon D600 and man that was much better then the 1R......
