Long awaited upgrade to our M6 line is finally here, bringing not only a modernized Android platform, but mainly marking a return of the AKM DACs to the M6 line!

Following the fire at AKM’s factory in 2020, we had to switch many of our products to the rival DACs from ESS, including our M6 and M6 Pro players. While that allowed us to experiment with some new audio designs, the tuning was never completely matching Shanling’s traditional house sound and it marked a shift in the sound of our portable players.

But the sweet AKM tuning is now back with the M6 Ultra. Returning to a slightly warmer and relaxed sound, taking listeners back to the original AKM M6 models and M8. Serving as a perfect alternative to our ESS Sabre based M7 portable player.

M6 Ultra is our first portable player adapting the newest generation of AKM DACs, utilizing four pieces of AK4493SEQ for a unique Quad-DACs design. This multi-DACs concept was inspired by a few old-school Shanling CD players, with an aim to maximise the potential of DACs for a balanced circuit. Now with four DACs, we are able to divide the signal four ways between each of them, achieving a completely independent fully balanced output.

Amplifier design was further adjusted for this Quad-DACs array, allowing for a higher power output than was possible on our previous AKM based M6 models. Offering up to 720 mW @ 32 Ohm output.

Rest of the M6 Ultra follows the high standard set by our latest Android players. Running on a much faster Snapdragon 665 CPU, with an open Android 10 system and an in-house developed Android Global Lossless Output (AGLO) system for an ideal sound performance. Operated through a nicely bright 5-inch 1080p touch screen and all packed into Shanling’s classic aluminium & glass build, this time inspired by the curves of M3X and M8.

With M6 Ultra we are also adding a new color to our portable players, stunning Emerald Green. You can combine it with a matching green leather case or went a more tradition way and opt for a black M6 Ultra and a brown leather case. (Leather case sold separately).

M6 Ultra will be available at international markets in early August at MSRP of 919 USD / Euro.

12 months after M6 Pro 2 they releasing new M6 version.
i should not have bought it cant even sell for good price
this is not good practice to release the 2nd versions with old CPU and old Android and then 12 months later releasing another new one

If it was actually good when you bought it, guess what? It will still be good tomorrow.

M6 Pro was released back in 2020 (OG M6 even in 2019), 21 version was only switch to different Analog circuit following the AKM fire.

And this is situation for all Android devices, there will always be some release with newer CPU/system, this is simple fact of the market that demanded switch from closed systems to Android rush.

I understand how you feel but the M6 21 and M6 Pro 21 were not planned models they were a reaction to the AKM fire, otherwise they would have had no daps to sell and probably a stockpile of SOC modules, screens, chassis etc.

M6/Pro were released before the fire, others were still in design when the fire happend.

The FiiO M17 was originally designed for the AKM4499 but had to be redesign half way through for ESS9038Pro. They made the decision to use their stock of AKM4499 they had for the desktop dac/amp instead.

The FiiO M11Plus had to be launched as M11Plus LTD due to FiiOs limited stock of AKM4497 and then redesigned and relaunched as M11Plus (with ESS)

iBasso DX300MAX was not meant to be a limited edition but the fire made it so.

The Shanling M9 (AKM4499 version) is a limited edition solely due to the fire. Another M9 with different DACs is in the works.

etc etc

Hmm, still really enjoying my OG M6 Pro, but this unit has me intrigued. More so than the new M7, as I'm a fan of the AKM sound. No idea if this could be considered an upgrade to the M6 Pro, more of a side grade perhaps? Four 4493s in exchange for two 4497s. I've never heard anything with the 4493s.
Shanling - Can you tell us what the dimensions of this new device is, or what it's going to retail at? Any thoughts on how this might sound in comparison to the original M6 Pro?

It's comparable in size to M7. So bit shorter than OG M6, but wider.

AK4493s is very new DAC, only few people had chance to try it so far.

In regards to comparison, unfortunately all our M6 Pro with AKM are stuck in customs on way from Munich show, haven't had chance to do direct comparison yet :D

Please do when you get a chance! I like them a bit wider than taller myself 😉
