Shanling H5 - Portable DAC/AMP/Player, AKM AK4493S DACs and sweet warm tuning

I ordered mine, I took advantage of the AliExpress promotions. I'm going to replace my Topping G5, I like the Topping sound, but honestly most of the time I prefer a sound closer to neutral but still warm. High expectations about it. The possibility of being a media player (via the memory card) and the adequate size seems tempting

@Shanling I'm really interested, but How does playing Offline files work? You still require your Phone? Or you can Fully operate playback on the Device itself? Does the Shanling H5 have Shuffle All tracks on the device? Can the H5 Read Sub Folders?

perhaps a video demonstration ?

Can you put this on Amazon US?

I've listened to M3 Ultra and M7 players and sound of which one of them is closer to H5?

From these two it would be closer to M3 Ultra in tuning.

can be powered directly from the USB In port?, or only works if its charged? (please answer also regarding the H7). thx 🙏🏻

Firsty, it can only run on battery power, it can't be run with empty battery just with USB Data connected.
The charging port is separate from data port. So you can run it with two cables connected to the computer.
Same for H7

The phone is only required if you want to browse through the music(by tags or folders).

H5/H7 can play the music directly, you can switch between songs, it would simply go through your folder and subfolders in alphabetical order(you can set on unit shuffle, folder repeat, etc)

If you want to just put in card and play shuffle all, you can do it, it would just require all the files to be in one big folder. No phone control would be needed for this.

I was interested in the H7 until I realised that it only runs on battery power.

Why don’t you make one without battery or at least be powered without the battery ? Is there a technical reason behind it ?
These H5 and H7 also don’t offer any feature to stop charging at a certain percentage.
Battery life will reduce quite fast with constant use, charge and discharge.

The last time I had a Shanling device which was plugged into the laptop all the time, it was so hot all the time, the battery got bulged and the back popped open after few months of usage (I still have it, just not usable anymore). So not really suitable for PC/Console. Only good for mobile phones and tablets where you don’t have it plugged-in all the time.

This is mainly DAC/AMP, small screen with two lines is all it needs for basic information and access to settings.
You can look at our M3 Ultra or M6 Ultra if you want the player with nice modern screen.
Can you please explain the rational for using really high headphone output impedance? This is something that pretty much nukes this as an option for any sensitive iems.

No specific technical reason, simply decision by produt manager/engineers.

Hi @Shanling, apologies if this has been answered before, but is the volume control digital or an analog pot?

Analog

According to our audio engineers, it's needed for the TPA6120A2 based amplifier. We understand it might be not ideal pairing with certain IEMs with problematic impedance curves, but others might profit from this and for most it will have no impact.

Please note that the earphones being sensitive has no direct connection to their impedance curve. They can be sensitive yet have flat impedance curve and be unaffected by higher output impedance.

@Shanling This looks like a potentially interesting device, I only have two questions:

1. Can the data/DAC usb port also function as a USB host? (To connect additional storage, like an SSD for example, in addition to the built-in SD card?)

2. I have seen a review which mentioned that the on device firmware does not currently show the name of the track, or album it is actively playing. Would that be possible to fit on the tiny screen with some future firmware update perhaps?

Thanks,

1. Not possible, it works only with the MicroSD card

2. On H5 we have new screen with two lines, so will see if we want to add it. But it would more likely be file name, the H5 itself doesn't read file tags.

Greetings. Now I have topping g5 and it seems to me that the sound is sharp, dry. Shanling H5 will give a softer and richer sound, should it be considered as an alternative to g5?

A comparison between Shanling H5 x Topping G5, in my opinion:

The difference in sound isn't drastically different, not to the point of weighing it down in an assessment.
Well, you have to make an effort to notice these meticulous sounds; G5 in absolute sharpness and beautiful transparency, H5 in a slightly "warmer" sound (a little more presence in the mid-bass and attenuation in the mid-high - but something very punctual, it's not exactly like equalizing).

Is this transparency superior in the G5? Yes, I can say that it is a device molded more in high definition, perhaps objectively better sound.

Not only that, but notably higher and more refined amplification (in technical aspects as well).

But I think that doesn't bring down the Shanling H5 as a whole: it's slightly more musical and less clinical, it brings a little more fun (in that little extra heat).

Its amplification capability is already good enough for IEMs... 840mw into 32ohms on the balanced 4.4mm output. It has three types of gains and I believe high impedance output (the G5 is technically fabulous in this parameter) from Shanling will only affect REALLY sensitive IEMs.

Shanling is simply more complete as a product because it has a basic screen (with information about battery level, volume, modes and some practical settings); and for being able to be a Media Player - although the Eddit Player application makes things more intuitive - being able to pause, play, advance and rewind a track. Yes, the fact that Shanling has a good mobile application that synchronizes without many bugs with the device already makes it highly interesting - less raw than Topping's product, even if the proposal is different.
