Sennheiser Momentum impressions thread
Jan 3, 2015 at 4:46 PM Post #631 of 931
The complaint about the low impedance is baseless, because these headphones are really designed to be used amp-less with iPods and iPhones and iPads and Android phones, as well as laptops from the on-board.

Sennheiser never really marketed to Momentum as Hi-Fi, did they? lol

Anyway, while in the minority, I truly wish Sennheiser released a pair of replacement pads that were larger in inner dimensions (at least close to something like the HD558/598 inner dimensions), perhaps deeper and more plush, and with the same amazing feeling leathers or Alcantara like the on-ear version.
I'd buy them even if they were priced 50-60 dollars. I think a lot of Momentum owners would agree, since the Momentum over-ear headphones just sound so damn good. Things like NAD HP50 or Focal Spirit Professional are more neutral, but not nearly as fun and easy to listen to.

There is currently a rumour for a larger Momentum planned for 2015. I mean, Sennheiser has to expand the lineup somehow. However, the earpads of the new version are said to be incompatible with the current over-ear version. Ugh ... XD

i hope they fix those earpad size on over ear version. i find my ear got burn feeling and very uncomfy after 30mins using it.
holy crap, where could be that rumors came from? new momentum 2015 with better comfy fullsize earpad and still portable? count me in. i will sell my current momentum after they release those new one.XD

I have the Momentum on-ear's. I have no idea what the over-ear's sound like but the on-ear's have a v-shaped sound signature with boomy bass and sparkly treble. These are my 'fun' headphones. It gives music a fun punch. It reminds me of how in photography you punch up a picture by increasing saturation and contrast.

i think om my ear the over ear version sounds more balance and have wide soundstage. but yeah the ear pad size is very annoying when u using it for long period listening.

So I've had the momentums for about a week now. First off, I agree they can sound fantastic...but. To my ears the they sound kind of sleepy and muffled in the upper mids and treble.

The bass has this wonderful understated powerful feel in songs that aren't very bassy but doesn't keep it together in fast Jazz and Rock. I'd prefer more definition personally.
I love the sound but it never made me want to dance, just not lively enough. If I could choose hps for nighttime listening only it would be these every time. Also edm is great but even then is sometimes cuddly.

If you like smooth blues this is mindblowing:                 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOLTrrcWE5c
But this feels too passive to me:                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GMQLjzVGfw
                                                                          and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxGDeteGHyY
Here the vocals are not veiled but I thought the bass intruded:                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMFWFhTFohk
The Jazz is under a brass section hating blanket:                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxlcgc6vXLs

For a headphone that is more vibrant, less veiling and has more bass definition should I get AKG K545,  Amperior,  Soundmagic HP100  or Denon D600?
or should I just EQ the heck out of the Momentums?

i can agree with your sentiments to an extent, the treble is rolled off, so that can contribute to that "muffled" sound your referring to. but i don't know if i'd go so far to say their "muffled"

i do think the bass is a bit loose, just a bit for fast paced songs, but for medium and slow tempo songs the quantity and the body of the bass is just enough and quite satisfying.

i have the amperiors, this might help!

Fair; muffled is an overstatement. I watched your full reviews and totally agree but I’m not sure I can hack the treble roll-off.
Staying with an over-ear design can anyone rate the K545/HP100s for treble clarity without sacrificing the momentums richness?

Maybe this also helps explain: the guitar here feels very non-aggressive because (i think) it lacks the upper range bite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIBeYoP9Wi0

good video, i would say this momentum over ear is lack of PRaT and speed bass, so the bass was still there but quality of the bass was not equal with this price point.

That makes a lot of sense - listening  right now.   So what which of it's competitors would you has the PRaT and speed but doesn't fall behind in other areas?
I'm so eager for that foot tapping

Exactly what I found, and the problem, at least for the over ear Momentums, seems to be a deep trough in the frequency response at around 4.6KHz. You can see this clearly on graphs from Inner Fidelity here.

I found that using a parametric equaliser with a boost of around 6-8db and a relatively narrow Q at the 4.6KHz point resolved the problem. For electronic music this trough doesn't seem to matter so much, but it makes vocals sound ill defined and muffled.

Can't start a new thread so I'll ask here!

I'm currently running HD 598's with e18 and Sony z3 as the source however I fly a lot and the HD 598's are not suitable, most my flights are 13 hrs plus so comfort is a primary consideration ... Any recomendations on over ear comfortable that sound as good as the HD 598's

My playlist currently is pink floyd, CCR. Supertramp etc ?

I've seen some reviews saying the momentums are not comfortable

Hot diggity dog them large Momentums looks sweet!

Edit: I hope they sound identical to the originals so finally people with large ears can enjoy what us average ears have been (...and because I don't want to buy a new pair). I also hope that the XL pads are interchangeable with the originals.

Edit 2: The cable looks beefier. I hope too that is interchangeable.
