So, what's the consensus in 2021? Still worth buying for someone with X2 and HD600?

Yes, the HD800S is still a relevant headphone today and will be an upgrade for Fidelio X2 and HD600 in many aspects.

But personally if I was buying now I would pay a bit more and get the ADX5000 instead, but that may just be my personal preference.

yes I auditioned them.. I was going to choose between a Hifiman HE1000 v1, Aeon 2 closed and an Arya. So far I really liked the way instruments sounded on the HD800s, the HE1000 was a bit flat for me I didn't like it that much. So I picked the HD800S, the soundstage isn't that bad too.. What amp/dac are you using?

So you compared the HD800S and Arya and preferred the HD800S?

You can see in my signature the gear I am using, I have the Questyle CMA Twelve and think it pairs wonderfully with the HD800S, and also have the Figaro 339 when I want to add that tube flavour.

Questyle CMA Twelve has a very slight warmth to it and does not have the glare you usually get with ESS dacs, while still providing plenty of detail with good soundstage/imaging. Its personally end game amp/dac for me with the HD800S and I highly recommend it. But then again I have not really heard too many high end amp/dacs so be wary of that..

Is this the main thread for HD800S? Hi, just a new owner of one, and thinking what amp/dac I should get. I stumbled upon the little dot mk6+ is it a good amp for the headphone? The dac I might get a schiit modius... Any help? Thanks.

If you specifically want to ask about amp/dac for your HD800S, probably post in here:

There is also another thread to post your impressions if you want:

Anyone have any tips or tricks on increasing the clamp force just slightly? The slide around a little too much while wearing my glasses. Drives me nuts lol. I have the exact opposite problem with the HD58x but loosening them was very easy. I have not yet found a way to increase the clamp on the HD800S

This is the reason why I rarely use my HD800S. My head is too narrow to get a good seal on the ear pads, therefore I lose a lot of bass impact and extension. On my miniDSP EARS jig, my HD800S have superior bass extension to my HD600, but on my own head my HD600 produces far better bass because the HD600 headband and ear pads are a much better fit for my anatomy. I wish Sennheiser made the HD800S with a narrower headband and stronger clamping force!!

If they did everyone else would be complaining about the tight clamping force. I'm sorry to hear about the poor fit you are experiencing. I have a fairly small head, not especially narrow mind you and luckily my 800S fit like a charm. Good luck.

There isn’t a significant bass presentation from the 800S. In my opinion it is a bit anemic with regard to bass or extension.

Yes I realise that, but the HD600 also isn't a bass monster, so the fact that I experience significantly more bass level, impact and extension with the 600 indicates a sealing problem with the 800S pads. I can recreate the same conditions on my miniDSP EARS jig when measuring the HD800S, HD600, or indeed any other over-ear headphone by slightly breaking the seal between ear pad and jig, - the bass level shelves down by as much as -10dB compared to when there is a perfect seal.

Realizing this thread has been in active for a couple of years, I'm hoping someone can share advice on the following --

I recently got a new HD800s in an open box deal. Unfortunately, one of the drivers just dies on me (within weeks). Open box deal means can't return it, and also means not covered by warranty. Scratching my head if anything practical to do.. thanks for any advice :)

Open box from an authorized dealer?
